BEIJING -- On day five in Beijing, Ivies earned their first medal of the Winter Games. Brown’s
Vincent Zhou, Cornell’s
Karen Chen and Yale’s
Nathan Chen helped Team USA finish with their best-ever result in the Team Figure Skating Event to win silver.
Canada women’s ice hockey continues undefeated in Group A play as they earned a 6-1 win over the Russian Olympic Committee. Cornell’s
Rebecca Johnston recorded a goal and an assist, while Princeton’s
Sarah Fillier tallied a goal and Cornell’s
Brianne Jenner contributed two assists in the win. Harvard’s
Emerance Maschmeyer made her Olympic debut and registered 11 saves.
Harvard’s
Keely Moy and Yale’s
Phoebe Staenz came up short with Team Switzerland against the USA, 8-0. Staenz and Moy contributed a combined three shots to help put the Swiss on the board. However, Switzerland rebounded against Finland in a 3-2 win on Monday morning (in the ET time). Staenz contributed seven shots in 29:21 minutes on the ice.
Czech Republic fell to Denmark, 3-2, on Monday afternoon in Beijing. Brown’s
Alena Mills and Cornell’s
Lenka Serdar saw 15:56 and 8:20 minutes if ice time, respectively, while combining for three shots.
Princeton’s
Kimberly Newell allowed two shots in China’s 2-1 loss to Sweden. Brown’s
Maddie Woo contributed one shot in 18:41 on the ice in attempt to lift China over Sweden.
Over on the slopes, Dartmouth’s
Nina O’Brien’s first run in the women’s giant slalom placed her in sixth place heading into her second run. During her second run, she endured a horrific crash that saw her chances of medaling come to a close. However, she is alert and responsive following the crash. Dartmouth’s
AJ Hurt did not finish in the women’s giant slalom.
Additionally, Dartmouth’s
Susan Dunklee participated in her second Biathlon event of the Winter Games as she finished 63
rd in the women’s 15km individual.
