Women's Ice Hockey

Ivies in Beijing Make a Statement on Day 1

BEIJING -- Ivies in Beijing opened their first day of competition making multiple statements.

A total of 13 women’s ice hockey players with Ivy League ties took to the ice for the first time in Beijing on Thursday morning (Wednesday evening in the United States). The women represented Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale and are competing on behalf of Canada, Switzerland, Czechia and China.

Canada women’s ice hockey started competition with a bang as they topped Switzerland 12-1 in their Olympic opener. Princeton’s Sarah Fillier and Dartmouth’s Laura Stacey contributed two goals apiece, while Princeton product Claire Thompson scored her first-ever goal for Team Canada and added four assists to become just the fourth Canadian to record four helpers in an Olympic game. Cornell’s Rebecca Johnston added a goal and three assists to the win.

Former Yale standout Phoebe Staenz along with Harvard’s Keely Moy attempted to help Switzerland battle back, but ultimately ended up falling short.

Czechia capped their women’s Olympic hockey debut with a 3-1 win over host China. Former Brown standout Alena Mills totaled 17:01 on the ice and Cornell’s Lenka Serdar saw 10:52 on the ice, both totaled two shots.

Princeton’s Kimberly Newell saw no ice time.

Over at the ski moguls, all three U.S. ladies, including Columbia’s Olivia Giaccio, made incredible runs to qualify for the finals.
