PRINCETON, N.J. – After guiding the No. 2 Columbia women’s fencing team to
its third consecutive outright title at the 2020 Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins, Lions’ head coach
Michael Aufrichtig was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year. Behind Aufrichtig’s guidance, Columbia is 18-0 at the last three Ivy League Round-Robins.
In his 10th season at the helm, Aufrichtig has led Columbia to five of the last six Ivy League titles, including four outright championships.
After opening the two-day event with a perfect 4-0 mark, the Lions carried its momentum into the final three rounds. The Lions defeated Princeton, 17-10, in the fifth round before taking down Yale, 18-9. Columbia closed out the two-day event by handing No. 10 Cornell a 15-12 to secure the program’s 12th title.
The Lions were led by four All-Ivy selections.
Maria Chart and
Ester Schreiber earned First-Team All-Ivy status in the saber and foil, respectively, while
Daniella Timofeyev earned second-team honors in the saber and
Natalie Minarik was slotted second team in the foil.
As announced on Sunday at the Round-Robins, the 2020 women’s fencing All-Ivy teams were selected based on individual performances. The top three finishers in each weapon earn All-Ivy first team honors and the next three fencers in each weapon earned second-team honors.
Aufrichtig and Columbia will now turn its attention to the 2020 NCAA Northeast Regional, set for Sunday, March 8 at Cornell. The defending national champions will look to claim its fourth national title in the last six seasons.
