Stellar Pitching Leads Yale and Columbia to Victories

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Day two of the 2025 Ivy League Baseball Championship hosted at George H.W. Bush ’48 Field at Yale University saw top-seeded Yale avoid elimination with a win, while second-seeded Columbia advanced to the championship tomorrow.

No. 1 Yale 7, No. 3 Penn 2 (Elimination Game)
Facing elimination, Yale wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first. It started when Garrett Larsen singled to center with one down. He later stole second to move himself into scoring position. Jake Williams then drew a walk to put runners on first and second, but that didn’t last long as both runners executed a double steal to move up 90 feet each. A wild pitch allowed Larsen to touch home and make it 1-0, while Williams moved to third. Williams then scored off Alec Atkinson’s sacrifice fly to right to push the lead to 2-0.

The Bulldogs added three runs on a pair of hits in the bottom of the second to push their lead to 5-0.

With time running out, Penn got on the board in the top of the sixth when Ryan Taylor singled to the center and then stole second. He later came around to score off Connor Chavez’s RBI single to make it 5-1.

Yale added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh when Tommy Martin hit a two-run home run to increase the lead to 7-1.

Penn in the top of the ninth, drawing back-to-back walks from Collins and Ernie Echevarria. Collins scored when Nick Spaventa dropped a single into right field to make it 7-2, but the Yale bullpen ended the threat to secure the win.

Bulldog starter Colton Shaw allowed three hits and a run over eight innings of work to pick up the win (8-2). He struck out five in the process.

Larsen paced all Yale hitters, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Penn had four different players tally hits, with Chavez and Spaventa registering RBIs each.

No. 2 Columbia 4, No. 4 Harvard 1 – 10 innings
With the Lions leading 1-0 going into the bottom of the second, Harvard’s Gio Colasante tied the game off a home run over the right center field wall.

Both teams went scoreless for the next seven innings, only to find themselves headed to extra innings.

Columbia’s Anthony Temesvary walked to open the top of the tenth. He was later lifted for pinch runner Dean Reynolds with one out. Reynolds took second off an error by the Harvard pitcher on a pick-off attempt. Sam Miller was intentionally walked, and Griffin Palfrey loaded the bases for the Lions when he reached first on an infield single to short. Following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Cole Fellows singled to left center that cleared the bases to break the tie and put Columbia in front 4-1.

Harvard threatened in its half the inning when it had runners on second and third with two outs, but a pop-up to short ended the inning.

Harvard’s Truman Pauley threw nine innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out a season-high 13.
