NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Top-seeded Yale and third-seeded Brown advanced into the winner’s bracket with wins on the opening day of the Ivy League Baseball Tournament at George H.W. Bush ’48 Field.
GAME 1: YALE 12, COLUMBIA 3
Top-seeded Yale opened Ivy League Tournament play with a 12-3 victory over Columbia. The Bulldogs took control midway through the game before putting it out of reach with a four-run eighth inning to move into the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
After Columbia scored first, Yale answered immediately by capitalizing on a pair of Lion errors to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. The Lions tied the game in the third, but the Bulldogs responded again with an RBI single from Jack Dauer before breaking the game open in the fourth inning.
Chris DiPrima delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon, clearing the bases with a two-out double to center field to extend Yale’s lead to 6-2. The Bulldogs continued to add on over the final four innings, including the decisive four-run eighth.
Jack Ohman earned the win for Yale, allowing two runs over five innings while striking out five. Teo Spadaccini was dominant in relief, retiring all nine batters he faced across three scoreless innings. DiPrima finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Bulldogs offensively.
GAME 2: BROWN 7, PENN 3
Brown capped off a dramatic finish in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth inning to stun Penn, 7-4, at George H.W. Bush ’48 Field.
Trailing 4-3 and down to its final two outs, the Bears mounted their comeback after Matt Luigs singled and later came around to score the tying run on a sacrifice fly from Alex Benevento. Brown then loaded the bases before Mark Henshon ripped a three-run double down the right field line to put the Bears in front for good.
The two teams traded momentum throughout the afternoon. Penn grabbed an early lead in the first inning before Brown answered in the fourth on an RBI double from Christian Butera. The Bears moved ahead again in the sixth behind RBI plays from Jake Edmunds and Andrew Hanlon, but Penn responded with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to reclaim the lead before Brown’s late rally.
Christian Keel earned the win in relief for Brown, allowing two unearned runs with three strikeouts across 3.0 innings. Camren Piwnicki recorded the final three outs for his first career save. Henshon and Luigs each finished with two hits, while Henshon drove in three runs.
