Ivy League Fencing Championships Head To The Big Apple This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. – The 2024 Ivy League men’s and women’s fencing champions are set for this weekend in New York City at Columbia University’s Levien Gymnasium.
 
Saturday’s action begins at 11 a.m. while Sunday’s competition begins at 10 a.m. Important links for the championships are available below.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • NATIONALLY RANKED FIELD – 11 Ivies are ranked in the midseason US Fencing Coaches Poll. On the women’s side, six teams are in the top-10 nationally. Columbia jumped into the nation’s top spot, followed by Harvard (No. 3), Princeton (No. 4), Penn (No. 6), Cornell (No. 7), and Yale (No. 10). In addition, all five men’s teams are nationally ranked as Columbia leads the men’s field as well with a No. 2 national ranking, while Princeton (No. 3), Harvard (No. 5), Yale (No. 6), and Penn (No. 8) follow.
  • DEFENDING CHAMPS – At the 2023 Championships at Cornell a year ago, the Princeton women and Harvard men both went undefeated to capture the Ivy League titles. The Princeton women went undefeated (6-0) for the second year in a row while Harvard was 4-0 and claimed its first Ivy title since 2020.
  • TOP OF THE PODIUM – Two individual Ivy champions from a year ago are returning to the strips for this year’s championships. On the men’s side, defending foil champion James Chen of Harvard is back while the defending epee champion, Tristan Szapary of Princeton eyes another Ivy title. In addition, two defending national champions are back competing at the event. Harvard women’s foilist Lauren Scruggs as well as Harvard epee fencer Jonas Hansen will look to continue their momentum.
  • THE ALL-AMERICANS – Last season, 35 Ivy League fencers earned All-America honors following their outstanding performances at the NCAA Championships. This year, the Ivy League returns 21 All-Americans from the 2022-23 season. Among the returning All-Americans are Columbia’s Colby Harley, Skyler Liverant, and Tierna Oxenreider, Harvard’s Jonas Hansen, Lauren Scruggs, Emily Vermeule, Faith Park and Zoe Kim, Penn’s Simon Kushkov, Isaac Herbst, Vivian Lu, and Sabrina Cho, Princeton’s Ronald Anglade, Matthew Limb, Brandon Lee, Tristan Szapary, Jessica Lin, and Ryan Jenkins, and Yale’s Jack Pan, Theodore Vinnitchouk, and Sydney Hirsch.
  • TOP-10 WINS – Ivy men’s and women’s programs have combined for over 40 wins against nationally ranked non-conference top-10 teams. In addition, Ivies have accumulated eight wins over defending national champion Notre Dame, including the Columbia men (2), Columbia women, Cornell women, Penn men, Penn women, Princeton women and Yale men.?
