PHILADELPHIA – Harvard and Penn picked up wins on the first day of the inaugural Ivy League Baseball Tournament at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
HARVARD 3, PRINCETON 2
The opening contest was a pitchers’ duel between Princeton’s Tom Chmielewski and Harvard’s Chris Clark.
Chmielewski pitched 6.1 innings allowing just six hits and no earned runs. Clark went 7.0 innings and permitted just three hits and two earned runs to pick up the win.
The Tigers opened the scoring with a solo blast in the top of the seventh off the bat of Philadelphia native Scott Bandura. Princeton tacked on another run with Carlos Abello coming around to score after Noah Granet was hit by a pitch.
The Crimson answered back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh. Jake Berger came around the bases on a throwing error. Will Jacobsen later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Brown.
George Cooper, who had three hits on the day, scored the decisive run after Ben Rounds had a base hit out to left field.
PENN 10, COLUMBIA 6
The Quakers got on the board early with Wyatt Henseler sending a two-run shot over the left field wall. Penn expanded its lead to 4-0 by the end of the inning with a Seth Werchan sending a 2 RBI single up the middle.
Henseler tallied his second run of the afternoon in the bottom of the second scoring on a single off the bat of Ben Miller and to give Penn a 5-0 lead.
The Lions cut into the Quakers lead with runs in the top of the fifth and sixth. Though Penn responded with two in the bottom of the sixth and three in the seventh to push ahead 10-2.
Penn had a total of seven pitchers on the mound after starter Owen Coady exited in the first inning. Brian Zeldin, who succeeded Coady was credited with the win. The Atlanta native tossed 3.1 innings, permitting just two hits.
Penn freshman Jarett Pokrovsky also had a productive day at the plate, batting 3-for-5.

Princeton and Columbia will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. Harvard and Penn will square off at 3 p.m. for a chance to move on to the final. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
