Five Ivies Land on MLB Opening Day Rosters

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Five Ivies dot Major League Baseball (MLB) Opening Day rosters as teams prepare for the coronavirus-altered 60-game season.

Dartmouth alumnus right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks will take the ball for the Opening Day start when the Chicago Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers Friday evening. Hendricks enters his seventh MLB season with a 63-43 career record, while averaging 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings and maintaining a 3.14 ERA.

Fellow Big Green alum right-handed pitcher Cole Sulser breaks camp with the Baltimore Orioles, having been selected off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays during the offseason. Sulser earned his first big league call-up in 2019, posting a 0.00 ERA and tallying 11.0 strikeouts per nine innings in seven appearances for the Rays.

Former Harvard Crimson lefty Brent Suter returns for his fifth season in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform. He boasts a 17-11 career mark, with 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings and a 3.63 ERA.

A pair of Princeton products—first baseman and designated hitter Mike Ford and right-handed pitcher David Hale—return to the New York Yankees lineup. The lone Ivy League position player to earn a spot on an Opening Day roster, Ford hit .259 with 12 home runs, 25 RBI and 30 runs scored in 50 games played for the Bronx Bombers in 2019. Hale, who is entering his seventh MLB season, claims a 13-10 career record, with 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings and a 4.27 ERA.

Nine Ivies donned MLB uniforms in 2019—the second-most since 2000, trailing only the 10 Ivies in the MLB in 2016. The Ivy League has had four-or-more players make MLB appearances in every season since 2000, including seven-or-more players in each of the past 12 years.

Prior to the abbreviated five-round 2020 MLB Draft, the Ivy League had produced five-or-more selections in eight of the past nine drafts and 122 MLB Draft picks since 2000, including multiple selections in 19-of-20 years. Four Ivies inked undrafted free agent contracts following the 2020 MLB Draft
