PRINCETON, N.J. -- Haibin Wang, a two-time Olympic medalist and an International Fencing Federation Hall of Fame member, has been named the head coach of Yale's men's and women's fencing programs.

Wang has served on Yale's coaching staff since 2014, starting as a volunteer before being named a full-time assistant coach in 2016. During his tenure, he has helped lead a resurgence of the Yale program. The Bulldogs placed 17th at the NCAA Championship in the season prior to his arrival and have now posted back-to-back top-10 finishes in the last two seasons, including a seventh-place finish this winter, Yale's best since 2002.

Wang has mentored Isaac Shelanski, who earned All-America recognition after finishing third in the epee at the 2018 NCAA Championship and was the 2019 Ivy League epee champion. In addition, women's fencers Camille Pham, Sarah Pak and Anna Zhou have each earned All-Ivy recognition with his guidance.

Prior to Yale, Wang served as the head men's foil coach for China's National Fencing Team, where he helped Lei Sheng win a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. He also coached athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in his home country and has guided fencers to gold medals at the Asian Championships and the World Cup of Fencing.

Wang currently serves as the Chairman of the China Fencing Association.

With a career spanning almost two decades, Wang was a decorated fencer as a mainstay on the Chinese national foil team from 1990 to 2005. Known for his fierce competitiveness and strong technique, he competed in four Olympic Games for China, winning Silver medals in 2000 in Sydney and in 2004 in Athens. In addition, he captured World Cup crowns in 1998 and 1999 and 2003. He was consistently ranked in the top 20 in the world throughout his career.

Wang is a 2005 graduate of Nanjing University with a degree in French Language and Literature. In addition, he holds Master's and Doctorate degrees in Exercise Science from Beijing Sport University.
