Five Ivies Named Tewaaraton Nominees

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Five Ivy League men’s lacrosse standouts are among the 25 nominees for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award, given annually to the top men’s player in the country.

Defending national champion and No. 5-ranked Yale leads the way with two players on the list in junior face-off specilaist TD Ierlan and junior attackman Jackson Morrill. 2019 Ivy champion Penn, ranked fourth in the nation, saw senior attackman Simon Mathias make the cut, while No. 9 Cornell is represented by junior attackman Jeff Teat and Princeton is represented by junior attackman Michael Sowers.

The five Ivies on the list of nominees trails only the ACC, which totaled seven, and leads the other conferences represented including the Big Ten (four), Patriot League (three), Colonial (three), Big East (two) and Southern (one).

Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 9 at a live event at the University Club in DC, and invited to the 19th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 30. The Ivy League has had three Tewaaraton Award winners over the past six years, including Ben Reeves from Yale last season. Reeves became the first Bulldog to earn the award and the fourth Ivy, joining Cornell’s Max Seibald (2009) and Rob Pannell (2013) and Brown’s Dylan Molloy (2016).

Teat is a Tewaaraton Award nominee for the second-straight season. This year, the junior is 10th in the nation in assists per game (2.62) and 14th overall in points per game (4.77). Mathias is a nominee for the first time in his career. The Quakers junior has 38 points on 23 goals so far this season, along with 19 ground balls. Sowers paces Princeton, leading the League in assists per game and points per game, ranking second in the country in the former and fourth nationally in the latter category. Morrill, who leads the Bulldogs with 57 points, ranks ninth in the nation in assists per game and 15th in points. In his first year with Yale after transferring from Albany, Ierlan currently leads Division I in faceoff success (.776) and ground balls per game (14.1).
