Columbia Perfect After Day One of Fencing Round-Robins

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After the first four rounds of the 2019 Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins, reigning Ivy League champion Columbia remains undefeated with a perfect 4-0 mark.
 
In the individual race, Harvard’s Eli Dershwitz will look to claim his third Ivy League title in saber as the senior finished day one with a 6-0 mark. Columbia’s Sam Moelis is 9-2 in the race for the men’s foil title. In epee, Penn’s Emon Daroian went 5-1 with Isaac Shelanski not far behind at 6-2.
 
The Lions defeated Brown by a score of 21-6 thanks in large part to a 9-0 performance from the saber team. Nolan Scruggs went 3-0 to help the foil squad posted a 7-2 win. Brown’s Timmy Frank and Ben Ryjikov each recorded 2-1 marks in the epee but it wasn’t enough as the Columbia epee contingency took the fight 5-4.
 
Columbia kept its momentum going into the second round with a hard-fought 14-13 win over Harvard. The Crimson claimed the saber battle as Dershwitz once again was unstoppable. Columbia’s foil squad went 6-3, while the epee group recorded a 5-4 win as Teddy Lombardo went 3-0 and Jarett Poliner tallied a 2-1 record.
 
In the third round of action, Columbia improved to 3-0 with a 16-11 win over Yale. The Lions took home the saber by a score of 5-4 and epee by way of a 7-2 decision. Yale once again shined in epee with a 5-4 win over the Lions. Columbia concluded the day with a 20-7 win over Princeton.
 
Harvard downed Yale by a score of 16-11 in the first round. The Crimson were led by world-renounced saber Eli Dershwitz, who contributed three victories to his squad that that went 6-3. Yale’s claimed the epee battle by a score of 5-4 thanks in large part to Isaac Shelanski who went 3-0.
 
Yale bounded back from its first-round defeat with a thrilling 14-13 victory over Princeton. The Bulldogs posted 6-3 decisions in saber and epee, while the Tigers’ foil team was strong with a 7-2 win.
 
Princeton got back into the win column in the third round with 20-7 victory over Penn. The Tigers used an 8-1 performance from its foil squad and a 7-2 showing from its epee team to secure the victory.
 
Penn used the final round to notch a 22-5 win over Brown. The Quakers’ saber squad posted a 9-0 win.
 
The final three rounds of action with begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. with Harvard and Penn, Princeton and Brown and Cornell and Columbia will face off to in the fifth round. Live results from the day can be found here.
