Ivy League Men's Fencing Round-Robins Set For This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. – The 2019 Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins get underway this weekend at the Lanman Center on the campus of Yale University. The field will include five Ivy League teams ranked in the most recent edition of the CollegeFencing360 poll.

On the men’s side, all three individual champions from a season ago will return to defend their titles, while 14 All-Ivy selections from 2018 will take the strip in New Haven.
 
No. 2 Harvard, No. 4 Columbia and No. 9 Penn shared the Round-Robin title with matching 4-1 records through the two-day competition, marking the third consecutive year the event ended in a three-way tie. No. 5 Princeton and No. 6 Yale are also ranked inside the men’s top-10.
 
Harvard senior Eli Dershwitz, fresh off a gold medal performance at the 64th Waraw Men’s Sabre World Cup, is a two-time National and Ivy League champion in sabre. The Sherborn, Mass., native is currently ranked as the No. 1 sabre fencer in the world and will focus on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo following the conclusion of his collegiate career.
 
Harvard’s Geoffrey Tourette will look to capture his second foil title at the Round-Robins after tallying a 15-0 record and plus-46 touch differential at the Ivy League Championships. The Cupertino, Calif., is unbeaten with a 14-0 mark after most recently leading the Crimson to a victory over NYU.
 
Penn’s Justin Yoo helped the Quakers to their third-straight Ivy League championship after winning the epee title at last year’s championship. Yoo owns a 7-2 record this season and is 141-60 in his four-year career. The senior recently reflected on his deep appreciation for team dynamics.
 
No. 4 Columbia is led by four All-Ivy selections from a season ago in senior foilist Nolen Scruggs, sophomore foilist Sidarth Kumbla and senior saber Calvin Liang. The Lions, which were national finalists a year ago, most recently went 1-1 at the St. John’s Invitational.
 
Princeton brings back two all-league honorees in sophomore saber Daniel Kwak and junior epee Wesley Johnson. The Tigers are fresh off four wins over top competition, including a 17-10 win over defending national champion Notre Dame at the Northwestern Invite.
