28 Ivies Participate in NFL Training Camps

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Twenty-eight Ivies are participating in National Football League (NFL) training camps, vying for a coveted 53-man active roster slot for the 2018-19 season.

The 28-player training camp total tops the historic high-water mark set last season and includes eight rookies eyeing their first taste at NFL action.

Among those rookies are 2018 NFL Draft selections Justin Watson (5th round, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Foye Oluokun (6th round, Atlanta Falcons) and 2018 Asa S. Bushnell Cup recipients Chad Kanoff (Offensive Player of the Year) and Matthew Oplinger (Defensive Player of the Year). Watson and Oluokun signed with their respective teams, while Kanoff and Oplinger are in camp with the Arizona Cardinals.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Ryan Fitzpatrick—who is entering his 14th season in the league as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—is the elder statesman among the Ivies in the NFL.

Ivy League football alumni dot 17-of-32 NFL training camp rosters. Eight teams claim multiple Ivies in camp: Atlanta Falcons (3), Cleveland Browns (3), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3), Arizona Cardinals (2), New York Giants (2), New York Jets (2), San Francisco 49ers (2) and Seattle Seahawks (2).

The 2018 NFL preseason slate commences on Thursday, Aug. 9, with 22 teams in action. On Saturday, Sept. 1, following the four-week preseason, all 32 NFL clubs will cut their 90-man training camp rosters to the requisite 53-man active roster.

Twelve Ivies appeared on NFL active rosters during the 2017 season, with James Develin and Kyle Juszczyk earning Pro Bowl nods and Develin competing in his third Super Bowl with the New England Patriots

The 2018 Ivy League football season kicks off on Friday, Sept. 14, with six games to appear on ESPN linear networks throughout the season. The Ivy League is coming off a 2017 campaign during which it led the FCS and ranked fourth overall in NCAA Division I with a .750 non-conference winning percentage, trailing only the SEC (.825), Pac 12 (.771) and Big Ten (.762).
