Ivies Ready for Final Non-Conference Weekend, Yale Visits No. 21/24 Duke

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton junior infielder Joseph Flynn, Penn sophomore right-handed pitcher Mitchell Holcomb and Harvard freshman right-handed pitcher and utility man Buddy Hayward earned the Ivy League’s weekly honors following non-conference series last week. This is the second weekly accolade for both Holcomb and Hayward, who were each honored on Feb. 26.

LEAGUE NOTES
  • Reigning Ivy League champion Yale visits No. 21/24 Duke for a mid-week pair, while Brown travels to receiving votes Dallas Baptist for a three-game set this weekend.
  • Penn will host the Ivy League’s first home games of the season, when Fairleigh Dickinson comes to Philadelphia for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 17.
  • Harvard claims the League’s best record thus far at 6-6.
  • Yale’s Griffin Dey leads the League with four home runs and a .657 slugging percentage.
  • Columbia’s Liam McGill paces the Ancient Eight with 24 total bases and 11 runs scored, while three Ivies—Brown’s Sam Grigo, Penn’s Matt McGeagh and Harvard’s Patrick McColl—have each driven in 11 runs.
  • Harvard’s Simon Rosenblum-Larson sits atop the League charts with 24 strikeouts.
  • Harvard’s Kevin Stone and Yale’s Kumar Nambiar are the only Ivies to have picked up multiple wins on the hill thus far.
  • Six Ivies are hitting .350-or-better—Dartmouth’s Sean Sullivan (.417), Brown’s Mark Sluys (.370), Dartmouth’s Michael Calamari (.360), Yale’s Tim DeGraw (.359), Princeton’s Joseph Flynn (.357) and Columbia’s Joe Engel (.356).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Princeton junior infielder Joseph Flynn hit .5454 with six hits in 11 at-bats on the Tigers three-game road swing at South Carolina.

The East Setauket, N.Y., native tallied two runs and two RBI in the three-game set, while registering a double and a home run. Flynn now paces the Tigers with a .357 average, .400 on-base percentage, 17 total bases, 10 hits and two home runs on the season. He compiled a .583 on-base percentage and .909 slugging percentage in this week’s series.
 
Flynn, who has registered a hit in 6-of-7 games thus far, is Princeton’s first Player of the Week since Billy Arendt on April 19, 2016.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Penn sophomore right-handed pitcher Mitchell Holcomb tossed six scoreless innings for the Quakers en route to his second Pitcher of the Week nod this season.
 
The Georgetown, Texas, product fanned eight batters in six innings, allowing just two hits. Holcomb—who held USC Upstate to a .100 batting average—exited the game with Penn holding a 2-0 advantage over the Spartans, though the Quakers eventually fell 7-2.

Holcomb was previously honored as the Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 26.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Harvard freshman right-handed pitcher and utility man Buddy Hayward contributed to each of the Crimson’s four victories over Presbyterian this week.

On the mound, the Plantation, Fla., native allowed just one unearned run over six innings of work, picking up the first victory of his collegiate career in Harvard’s 2-1 win on March 9. He scattered five hits and struck out six in the start. At the plate, Hayward was 1-for-6 for the series, but did tally a run, three RBI and two walks in nine plate appearances.
 
Hayward, who held Blue Hose hitters to a .217 clip, earns the second Rookie of the Week nod of his Crimson career. He was previously honored on Feb. 26.
