Columbia, Harvard, Penn Share Men's Fencing Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. – For the third straight year, the 2018 Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins ended in a three-way tie.
 
Columbia, Harvard and Penn shared the Round-Robin title with matching 4-1 records.  This marks the 39th title for the Lions, the 10th title for Harvard and the 17th title for the Quakers.
 
Individually, Eli Dershwitz took home the individual crown in the saber with a 14-1 overall mark. The Crimson’s Geoffrey Tourette (15-0) went undefeated in the foil to take home the individual title. Penn’s Justin Yoo earned the men’s epee title with a record of 10-4. 
 
In round 6, Columbia handed Penn its first loss of the round-robins defeating the Quakers 15-12 behind a strong performance in the foil, tallying a 6-3 mark and a hard-fought 5-4 win in the saber.
 
Harvard opened the day with a 16-11 win over Columbia. Harvard’s foil went 6-3 thanks in large part to Geoffrey Tourette who went undefeated against Columbia. The Lions’ earned a hard-fought 5-4 battle in the epee. The Crimson closed out round-robins with an exciting victory over Princeton to secure a share of the title.
 
Penn, which defeated top-ranked Harvard yesterday, opened day two of action with a 17-10 win over Yale. The Quakers then earned a thrilling 14-13 win over archrival Princeton.
 
Trailing 13-12, Princeton’s Dylan Kim registered a victory of Jake Raynis in the epee to knot the score at 14. The decision came down to the foil, where Penn’s Willie Upbin registered a 5-4 win over Samuel Barmann to secure the victory for the Quakers. Penn concluded the day with 23-4 win over Brown.
 
Princeton, which shared the title with Penn and Columbia a season ago, finished the round-robins with a 2-3 mark. Yale (1-4) took fifth and Brown (0-4) finished fifth.
 
Up next, the Ivies will compete at the 2018 NCAA Regional Championship, March 12.
