PRINCETON, N.J. -- Two of the final three Ivy League baseball weekly awards went to the two squads that earned berths to the Championship Series, while the third when to one of the teams on the outside looking in.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Needing at least two wins in its final four games to clinch its first berth to the Championship Series since 2010, Columbia (24-19, 16-4 Ivy) decided it couldn't wait, sweeping a Friday double-header with Penn (22-21, 7-13 Ivy) to win the Lou Gehrig Division. Senior Alex Black (The Woodlands, Texas) was a key figure in the two wins that gave the Lions the title, batting 4-of-7 with four runs, two doubles and a walk on the day.
Columbia was not finished, however, as it still had work to do to clinch home field advantage in the Championship Series. It took care of that as well, sweeping the Quakers again the next day. Not only did Black hit 3-of-6 with a run, a double, a home run and three RBI, but he pitched the seventh to close out the first game in a 1-0 Lions' victory for his fourth save of the season.
Black earns his first career Ivy League weekly award and becomes Columbia's first Player of the Week since Dario Pizzano on May 1, 2012.
Black's Weekly Stats
6 GP, .450 AVG. (9-of-20), .750 Slugging %, .560 OBP, 4 BB, 5 Runs, 3 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI
2 APP, 2.0 IP, 1 Hit, 1 BB, 1 K, 0.00 ERA, 1 Sv.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Although Princeton (14-28, 11-9 Ivy) finished tied for second in the Gehrig Division with Cornell (23-17, 11-9 Ivy), it was not for lack of effort on the part of junior Mike Ford (Belle Mead, N.J.). Ford had an outstanding season both on the mound and at the plate, and the final week of the season was just another example of that fact.
Ford pitched a career-high 10 innings in the Tigers' 5-2 win at Cornell, giving up seven hits and two runs, one earned, while walking one and striking out four. He posted an ERA of 0.90 and recorded his fifth complete game of the season. His performance on the mound just slightly overshadowed his performance at the plate, as Ford's grand slam in the top of the 10th gave Princeton a lead it would not relinquish.
Ford takes home his fourth overall weekly award but only his first career Pitcher of the Week honor, as he was named Player of the Week on April 9 and twice earned Rookie of the Week in 2011.
Ford's Weekly Stats
4 GP, .533 AVG. (8-of-15), .733 Slugging %, .611 OBP, 3 BB, 2 Runs, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 SB
1 APP, 1 GS, 1 CG, 10.0 IP, 7 Hits, 2 Runs, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 0.90 ERA, 1-0
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth designated hitter Joe Purritano (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) may be a rookie, but he has played like anything but, as he takes home the third weekly award of his young career. Purritano was named Player and Rookie of the Week on April 16.
Last week, Purritano led Dartmouth (31-7, 15-5 Ivy) to a berth in the Championship Series by batting .500 (5-of-10) with four runs and four RBI in a four-game sweep of Harvard (10-31, 7-13 Ivy). He hit a triple and walked four times in the series as Dartmouth won the Red Rolfe Division for the sixth-straight season. In the Big Green's other game on the week, Purritano finished a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-of-5 with two runs, a double, a triple and four RBI.
Purritano's Weekly Stats
5 GP, .533 AVG. (8-of-15), .867 Slugging %, .650 OBP, 4 BB, 6 Runs, 1 2B, 2 3B, 8 RBI
Yale (13-25, 10-10 Ivy) closed its season on a high note, sweeping a four-game set with Brown (5-32, 3-17 Ivy). The Bulldogs' 10-10 League record is their best since 2011, when they finished 11-9.
Dartmouth and Columbia will square off in the Championship Series in New York, with a double-header starting at noon on Saturday and a single game, if necessary, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. This Series marks a rematch of 2010, when Dartmouth defeated the Lions in New York, two games to one.
