PRINCETON, N.J. -- Columbia maintained its spot in first-place overall and leads the Lou Gehrig Division after taking three of four from last year’s Ivy League champion, Cornell.
For the week, the Lions (17-16, 9-3 Ivy) went 4-1, with its only loss a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Big Red (18-13, 6-6 Ivy) in 10 innings. After starting the season 2-11, Columbia is 15-5 in its last 20 games and has climbed over .500. Senior Alex Black led the Lions, batting .562 (9-of-16) with four walks, two doubles, one home runs, three runs and four RBI.
Not to be outdone, Dartmouth (22-6, 8-4) went 5-0 last week, including a four-game sweep of Brown (3-24, 1-11 Ivy) in which the Big Green outscored the Bears, 27-5. For the week, Dartmouth racked up 46 runs, thanks to a 19-4 win at Holy Cross in non-conference action. The Big Green remains in first in the Red Rolfe Division and tied for second overall.
Princeton (11-21, 8-4 Ivy) moved into second-place in the Gehrig Division after taking three of four at Penn (20-14, 6-6 Ivy). The Tigers are 10-6 in their last 16 games after opening the season 1-15. Junior Alec Keller batted .529 (9-of-17) with two walks, one double, one home run, seven runs and three RBI in five games last week, which included a 9-7 win at in-state rival Monmouth.
Harvard (8-24, 5-7 Ivy) and Yale (8-21, 5-7 Ivy) split a pair of double-headers in Cambridge, Mass., and are now three games back of Dartmouth in the Rolfe Division.
The upcoming week features more inter-divisional action and a non-conference game on ESPN3. On Wednesday, Princeton will face BIG EAST foe St. John’s in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. The conference slate features more back-to-back double-headers, as Yale will host Dartmouth, Cornell will take on Penn, Harvard will travel to Brown and Columbia will head south to Princeton.
PLAYER/ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth freshman Joe Purritano (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) had about as good a week as someone could have, batting .526 (10-of-19) with a slugging percentage of 1.368 and an on-base percentage of .571. He hit two doubles, one triple and four home runs, knocking in 11 runs while scoring eight himself. He also walked twice.
For his efforts, Purritano was named to the Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week list. He hit safely and recorded at least one RBI in all five games. He batted 3-of-5 with two runs, a triple, two home runs and five RBI in Dartmouth’s 11-3 win over Brown on Saturday and then went 3-of-6 with three runs, two home runs and four RBI in the Big Green’s double-header sweep on Sunday.
Purritano is the second player to earn both Player and Rookie of the Week this season, joining Penn’s Michael Vilardo (March 26). He is the third Big Green to be named Player of the Week (Nick Lombardi, March 5; Jeff Keller, April 2) and the second to be named Rookie of the Week (Trent Goodrich, March 19).

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Princeton senior Zak Hermans (Coppell, Texas) made his one appearance last week count, as he went the distance in a seven-inning victory over Penn for his League-leading fourth complete game of the season. Hermans got Princeton out to a good start in its four-game set with the Quakers, as he struck out a season-high 12 batters, two shy of matching his career-best, en route to the 7-2 victory. He gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings. Hermans has won his last three starts, going the distance in each contest.
Hermans earns his third career Pitcher of the Week award as he becomes the first Tiger to earn the honor this season. It marks his fifth career weekly award, as he was named Rookie of the Week twice in 2010.
