PRINCETON, N.J. -- After a grueling non-conference slate that included contests against some of the top teams in the country, the Ivy League baseball teams kick off their conference slate this week.
In non-conference action, three teams have separated from the rest of the pack. In the Lou Gehrig Division, Cornell (11-5) and Penn (12-7) have vacillated between first and second-place, while Dartmouth (11-1) leads the Red Rolfe Division by a comfortable margin.
That could all change, however, with the start of League play. Double headers abound this weekend, as the Big Red and Princeton (2-16) will host Brown (1-10) and Yale (1-13), while Columbia (6-11) and the Quakers will face Harvard and Dartmouth.
In the final full week of non-conference action, Cornell extended its winning streak to an Ivy-best seven games, second-longest run this season behind Dartmouth’s 8-0 start to the season. The Big Red swept through Davidson and Villanova for its longest winning streak since 1990. Penn saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with an 8-6 loss to Lafayette, but the Quakers have won eight of their last 10 games.
The Big Green, meanwhile, dropped its first – and only – game of the season when it fell to Slippery Rock, 7-3. But Dartmouth bounced back with a three-game winning streak, and its 11-1 record is the best 12-game start in school history. Dartmouth finds itself in the receiving votes category of both the NCBWA and Coaches polls.
Columbia is on its longest winning streak of the season after taking three from NYIT and one from Army, while Harvard ended a 14-game losing streak with a 4-3 win at Houston Baptist. The Crimson then gave Bill Decker his first winning streak and his first series victory as Harvard’s head coach with a 6-1 win over the Huskies in the rubber game.
PLAYER/CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Penn freshman Michael Vilardo (Cary, Ill.) had a career week, hitting safely in all five games while recording an batting average of .524 (11-of-21). He slugged .905 with five doubles and a home run, knocked in six runs and scored eight more. He walked four times and had an on-base percentage of .600, while stealing two bases.
In leading his team to a 4-1 week, Vilardo had three multi-hit games, including a 3-of-4 performance against Villanova and a 4-of-5 game at Lafayette. He recorded an extra-base hit in all five games and an RBI in four of the five games. His team was 4-0 when he knocked in at least one run.
Vilardo is the first rookie to be named Player of the Week since Columbia’s Dario Pizzano on April 13, 2010. He receives his second Rookie of the Week honor, as he previously earned the award on March 5.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth senior lefty Michael Johnson (Georgetown, Mass.) made both of his starts last week count, as he won both games to help the Big Green improve to 11-1, the best 12-game start in program history. Johnson threw 13 innings, allowing just 10 hits and two runs, while striking out 18. He finished with an ERA of 1.38 on the week.
In a 6-0 win over North Dakota State, Johnson scattered five hits over seven innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters. In his next start, Johnson struck out six in six innings of work against Bradley, giving up two runs in a 7-4 Big Green victory.
Johnson takes home his first career Ivy League weekly award. He is the third Dartmouth pitcher to be named Pitcher of the Week this season, joining Cole Sulser (March 5) and Kyle Hunter (March 19). It’s the first time the Big Green has received at least three Pitcher of the Week awards with three different pitchers since 2010, when the recipients were Robert Young, Sulser and Kyle Hendricks.

CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Harvard’s first winning streak of the season was due in large part to the performance of freshman righty Sean Poppen (Chesapeake, Va.). Poppen went the distance in the rubber match at Houston Baptist, allowing three hits and one run over nine innings, while striking out three. He is the first Crimson pitcher to record a complete game this season.
Poppen is Harvard’s first Rookie of the Week since Jack Colton on April 19, 2011, and the Crimson’s first pitcher Rookie of the Week since Andrew Ferreira on April 20, 2010.
