PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 4 Brown and No. 3 Columbia defeated higher-seeded opponents on the opening day of the Ivy League softball tournament. Brown took down Princeton, 4-0 in the tournament opener before Columbia defeated Harvard, 2-1 in game two.
GAME 1: No. 4 Brown 4, No. 1 Princeton 0
All-Ivy first teamer Alexis Guevara shined in her Ivy League tournament debut, pitching a complete-game shutout for the Bears while allowing six hits and striking out three without allowing a walk.
Brown scored in the second inning with a bases loaded walk before adding another run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Amanda Deng. The Bears added insurance in the seventh with two more runs, including an RBI double by Jasmine Hsiao.
Princeton’s Brielle Wright took the loss in the circle despite allowing just four hits.
GAME 2: No. 3 Columbia 2, No. 2 Harvard 1
Friday’s nightcap was a pitcher’s duel, with the game combining for just three hits. Harvard drew a run in the first inning with an RBI single before 16 of the game’s next 18 batters were retired. Harvard had two runners on with two outs on in the fifth, but Columbia quickly put an end to that rally with a fly-out to left.
A walk and hit by pitch put two runners on for Columbia with two outs, and down to their final strike, Caylene Nguyen hit a pitch deep to left, allowing two runners to score on the play to flip the script and give the Lions the late advantage.
Columbia’s Jordan Hill spun a complete game, allowing just two hits while striking out two. Despite suffering the loss, Harvard’s Nicolette Hunter also spun a gem, pitching 6.2 innings without allowing a hit while also striking out eight batters.
Due to the forecasted rain, Friday’s games of the Ivy League softball tournament, which were originally scheduled for 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., will be delayed. Friday’s games will start no earlier than 1 p.m. with times for all upcoming tournament games to be determined. An update to game times will be announced on the
