PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — Princeton earned its eighth consecutive Ivy League women’s rowing championship Sunday morning, winning the Varsity Eight Final by nearly 4 seconds over second-place Yale. The title was the Tigers 22
nd all-time Ivy League title.
Yale won both the team points title and the Ivy League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Rowing Championships. The Bulldogs totaled 89 points across the six events to win the team title, clearing Princeton by five points. Yale won the Second Varsity Eight and the Varsity Four A races while coming in second in the Varsity Eight final to win the automatic qualifier by one point over the Tigers.
Brown came in third in the team total with 72 points, followed by Harvard, who had 47 points. Dartmouth was a close finisher behind Harvard with 45 points, and Penn, Columbia, and Cornell finished out the rest of the standings order with 37, 30, and 13 points respectively.
Princeton started Sunday off with a three-second victory over Yale in the Varsity Four C Grand Final, crossing the line at 7:15.359. Yale finished second at 7:18.666 and Columbia finished less than half a second behind at 7:19.071.
Next up was the Varsity Eight Grand Final, which Princeton won to make it two-for-two in gold medals to start the morning. The Tigers, who had the best time in the heats on Saturday, improved their heat time by four seconds and won the gold medal in 6:01.186. Yale also bettered their heat time, finishing in 6:05.066 and Brown came in third at 6:06.861.
The closest margin of the day came in the Second Varsity Eight final as Yale beat Princeton by 0.638 seconds to finish atop the podium. The Bulldogs finished in 6:06.752 while Princeton came in at 6:07.390 in the event. Brown finished third at 6:12.850 for the team’s second-straight bronze finish.
Yale made it two-straight gold medal finishes with a win in the Varsity Four A race, crossing in 6:52.868. Brown’s Varsity Four crew came in second at 6:57.904 and Princeton finished third at 7:01.397.
Yale and Princeton had essentially made it a two-team race for the team title as, through four events, Yale totaled 73 points, Princeton had 65 points, and Brown was next closest with 59 points. The Bulldogs just needed their Third Varsity Eight and Varsity Four B teams to run solid races and Yale would take the team title.
The Bulldogs moved one step closer by having the same order of finish from the Varsity Four A race occur in the Third Varsity Eight final as Yale finished first in 6:24.689 and Brown (6:28.031) came across just over a second ahead of Princeton (6:29.331) to take second. Then, in the closing grand final of the day, Yale won the Varsity Four B final over Princeton, posting a 6:55.015 time. The Tigers finished in 6:58.308 and Brown came in third at 7:05.268.
