PRINCETON, N.J. – After a highly-competitive regular season that saw five Ivy League men's lacrosse teams ranked in the top-20, the Ivy League announced the 2024 All-Ivy teams and major award winners.
Yale’s
Matt Brandau was a force to be reckoned with all season en route to being named the 2024 Ivy League Player of the Year for the first time in his illustrious five year career. The attacker scored 43 goals and handed out 54 assists for both a NCAA-leading and league-leading 97 points and 6.93 points per game. His 97 points were 24 more than the next closest player in the conference and 20 from the next closest player nationally. Additionally, he ranked first in the NCAA and Ivy League in assists and was second in the Ivy League in goals while ranking seventh nationally. In Yale’s regular season finale against Princeton, Brandau became the all-time Ivy Leader in points (356), and heading into the tournament, Brandau is tied for the all-time Ivy League lead in goals (197). Brandau scored goals in 13-of-14 games and had three or more goals in nine games, including eight of Yale’s last nine games. In addition, Brandau set a career-high of 13 points in a win over Colgate, one of two double-digit point games on the year for the senior.
Willem Firth played a key role for the Ivy League’s outright champion Cornell this year, totaling 21 goals and 12 assists for 31 points in 13 games. The first-year attacker scored in 11-of-13 games, scoring multiple goals in six games, and had points in 12-of-13 games. Firth opened his collegiate career with back-to-back four-goal efforts, then had a season-high five points in a late-season win over Harvard that helped Cornell eventually wrap-up the 2024 Ivy League title.
Yale’s
Andy Shay was named the 2024 Ivy League Coach of the Year after helping his Bulldogs take a step forward from 2023, finishing tied for second with a 4-2 record in Ivy League play and posting an 11-3 overall record. Yale spent a number of weeks inside the top-10 nationally, is ranked No. 10 in RPI, and currently boasts the top scoring offense in the nation with 15.93 goals per game. It is Shay’s third Ivy League Coach of the Year honor and first since 2018.
Six of the seven Ivy League members were represented in the All-Ivy First Team, with Yale leading the way with five honorees followed by three each from Cornell and Penn, two each from Harvard and Princeton, and one from Brown. Brandau was one of two Yale players unanimously selected to the All-Ivy First Team, the other being face-off specialist
Machado Rodriguez. The other two unanimous selections to the All-Ivy First Team were Cornell’s standout attacker
CJ Kirst and Penn’s stellar defenseman
Brendan Lavelle.
Overall, across both All-Ivy Teams, each Ivy League member institution was represented. When including second-team recipients, Princeton had the most honorees with seven representatives followed by six each from Yale and Penn, five from both Cornell and Harvard, two from Brown, and one from Dartmouth.
Additionally, one student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the field as members of the 2024 Ivy League men’s lacrosse Academic All-Ivy team. Brown’s
Zander Valentini, Cornell’s
Marc Psyllos, Dartmouth’s
Griffin O’Neil, Harvard’s
Collin Bergstrom, Penn’s
James Shipley, Princeton’s
Sean Cameron and Yale’s
Nicholas Ramsey were honored.
