Cornell's Arujau Claims Second-Straight NCAA Title; Four Ivies Named All-Americans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Once again, the Ivy League came away from the NCAA Wrestling Championships with a national champion as Cornell’s Vito Arujau earned his second-straight 133-pound title.

Arujau successfully defended his 133-pound title with a 5-3 win over Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix who was the top seed in the weight class. In a match that lasted over 20 minutes, Arujau trailed Fix 2-0 after the first two periods before scoring a takedown and receiving a stalling point. The win earned Arujau the honor of being just the fourth two-time NCAA Champion in Cornell history.

Arujau made it to the championship match following a win over Lehigh’s Ryan Crookham in the semifinals. Arujau, who had previously lost twice to Crookham throughout the season, recorded a dominant 13-3 win to advance to the finals.

The Big Red finished second overall with 72.5 points as Cornell extended its streak of finishing in the top 10 of every tournament it has competed in since 2008. The second-place finish matches the best finish in program history as Cornell placed second in both 2010 and 2011. Having placed third a season ago, Cornell has now recorded consecutive top-five finishes for the first time since 2012-13.

Three other Ivies were named All-Americans for their performances in Kansas City: Cornell's Jacob Cardenas (197) and Meyer Shapiro (157) and Columbia's Lennox Wolak (174).
