Five Ivies Earn All-America Honors at NCAA Wrestling Championships

CLEVELAND – The Ivy League concluded another successful NCAA Wrestling Championship, highlighted by five All-America performances at Rocket Arena from March 19–21. The league has now produced at least three All-Americans each year since 1998.

Columbia (17th, 25 points), Cornell (18th, 21.5), Penn (19th, 21) and Princeton (20th, 20) finished consecutively in the team standings. Brown placed 45th with three points, while Harvard finished 57th with one.

Princeton’s Marc-Anthony McGowan finished as runner-up at 125 pounds, making an impressive run as the No. 10 seed. He became the program’s 10th NCAA finalist and was one of two No. 10 seeds to reach the championship bout. Along his run, McGowan secured a double-overtime victory over No. 2 seed Eddie Ventresca (Virginia Tech) in the quarterfinals.

Columbia’s Cesar Alvan placed third at 165 pounds. He advanced to the semifinals before falling to top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink of Penn State, the eventual national champion. Making his third NCAA Championship appearance, Alvan became the seventh All-American in Columbia program history. He secured his third-place finish with a win over Arizona State’s Nico Ruiz.

Penn had two All-Americans, as CJ Composto (141) and Cross Wasilewski (149) each placed seventh. It marks the first time since 2006 that the Quakers have had multiple All-Americans at the same championship. Composto earned All-America honors for the third time in his career.

Cornell’s Meyer Shapiro earned All-America honors for the third consecutive year, placing eighth at 157 pounds.

In total, 27 different Ivies from all six programs competed at the championships.
