PRINCETON, N.J. — Both Ivy League regular season champions had individuals recognized as individual major award winners as Columbia’s
Abbey Hsu won Player of the Year and Princeton’s Ellie Mitchell claimed her third-consecutive Defensive Player of the Year honor. Columbia Head Coach
Megan Griffith was also named the Coach of the Year, the second-straight year she and her staff have been recognized with the league’s top honor. Penn’s
Mataya Gayle was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
Hsu led the top-scoring team in the Ivy League to a 13-1 record in Ivy League play, helping the Lions claim a share of the regular season title. She averaged a league-high 19.4 points per game in conference play, shooting 45.1 percent from the floor and an Ivy League-best 43.3 percent from three-point range. Hsu ranked fifth in the Ivy League with 7.1 rebounds per game and tied for 11
th with 2.4 assists per game. She scored in double-figures in each game this season, scoring an overall season-high of 31 points against San Francisco and posting 28 points in Ivy League play twice, against Penn and Brown.
Mitchell was an all-around defensive presence for a Princeton team that led the Ivy League in scoring defense by a wide margin, allowing just 51.1 points per game, nine points better than the next team on the list. Mitchell, one of the best rebounders in the country, led the Ivy League with 8.9 rebounds per game, 3.7 of which came on the offensive end. She also averaged 1.5 steals per game, ranking sixth in the conference. Mitchell had double-digit rebounds in 12 games, with a season-high 19 coming against Villanova in early December.
Gayle was one of three Penn players to average double figures, with her 12.9 points ranking 12
th in the Ivy League this season. The newcomer hit 26 three-pointers in 14 Ivy League games, ranking third in the conference, knocking them down at a 31.3 percent clip. Gayle was also top-10 in assists with 3.4 per game, and ranked 13
th in steals with 1.1 per game. She had double-digit points in nine Ivy League games, and reached that mark in eight of her last 11 Ivy League games.
Griffith makes it two Ivy League Coach of the Year honors in as many seasons after leading Columbia to its third-straight 20-win season and a 13-1 mark in Ivy League play, besting last year’s 12-2 mark and earning the Lions a share of the 2023-24 Ivy League Regular Season Title, the second year in a row that has happened and the second Ivy League regular season title in program history.
Hsu was one of two players unanimously selected to the All-Ivy First Team, the other being Princeton’s
Kaitlyn Chen. Chen, last year’s Ivy League Player of the Year, was seventh in the Ivy League with 15 points per game and first with 5.9 assists per game. She also averaged 4.2 rebounds per game as well as 1.4 steals per game.
Kyla Jones led Brown with 16.9 points per game, an average that ranked tied for third in the Ivy League, and added 5.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The Ivy League’s second-ranked scoring player,
Harmoni Turner, earned her second-straight First Team All-Ivy nod after leading Harvard to an Ivy Madness appearance as the No. 3 seed. Turner averaged 18.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game, all averages ranking in the top-10 across Ivy League players. The final All-Ivy First Team spot went to Penn’s
Jordan Obi, who nearly averaged a double-double with 14.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in Ivy League play.
The All-Ivy Second Team featured a pair of players from both Columbia and Princeton as well as a second All-Ivy selection for Penn. Columbia’s
Cecelia Collins and
Kitty Henderson received their first Ivy League honors, while for Princeton, Mitchell and
Madison St. Rose were placed on the team. Mitchell and St. Rose each earned major awards last season, but this marks the first All-Ivy recognition for either player. Lastly,
Stina Almqvist rounds out the All-Ivy Second Team for the Quakers’ second selection and her first honor.
Additionally, one student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the court as members of the 2023-24 Ivy League Women's Basketball Academic All-Ivy team. Brown’s
