Men's Tennis Major Awards, All-Ivy Teams Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. — Following an impressive season of Ivy League men’s tennis in which three programs (Harvard, Columbia, and Cornell) cracked the top-25 rankings throughout the season, the Ivy League has announced the Major Award winners and All-Ivy teams for the 2022-23 season.

After a season that saw the Lions finish second in conference-play with a 6-1 record, Columbia’s Michael Zheng earned Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors as the freshman won Rookie honors unanimously.

Zheng posted an overall record of 29-7 and a spring dual match record of 15-4. The Montville, N.J., native ranked as high as eighth in singles throughout the year and was the champion of the 2022 Northeast Regional Championships. Throughout the year, Zheng posted wins over numerous nationally-ranked players including Shunsuke Mitsui (Tennessee), Alexander Hoogmartens (UCLA), Blake Croyder (Georgia), Tyler Zink (OK State), Filip Planinsek (Alabama), Yuta Kikuchi (Cal), and Ryan Seggerman (North Carolina).

Zheng becomes the first student-athlete in Ivy League men's tennis history to win the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards while also being named to the First-Team for singles and doubles. He is only the second student-athlete to win Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. Zheng is the seventh Lions student-athlete to be recognized as the Ivy League Men’s Tennis Player of the Year.

Howard Endelman earned Ivy League Coach of the Year honors following a 6-1 record in conference-play to go along with a 19-3 overall record, good for the best winning percentage in the conference. Endelman led Columbia to its best-ever regular season ITA national finish (#13) and will host the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Tournament later this week.

In addition to Zheng, Cornell’s Radu Papoe and Harvard’s Harris Walker and Henry von der Schulenburg were unanimous selections to the First-Team All-Ivy singles selections.

Zheng and Theo Wineger of Columbia were the only doubles team to be voted to the First-Team unanimously.

Columbia’s Zheng and Harvard’s Walker are the lone Ivies to claim First-Team All-Honors in singles and doubles.

Seven of the eight Ivy League programs are represented between the First and Second All-Ivy squads.

Additionally, one student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the court as members of the 2023 Ivy League Men's Tennis Academic All-Ivy team. Brown’s Niraj Komatineni, Columbia's Ishaan Ravichander, Cornell’s Samuel Paquette, Dartmouth's Logan Chang, Harvard’s Steven Sun, Penn's Kevin Zhu, Princeton’s Thomas Bosancic and Yale's Theo Dean were each named to the team.
