Columbia, Cornell Earn Shares of Men's Tennis Title

PRINCETON, N.J. — In a thriling match between the top two teams in the Ivy League standings, Cornell earned a 4-3 win over Columbia to clinch a share of the Ivy League title. Columbia, who entered the match at 6-0, had already earned a share of the title with a win over Dartmouth last weekend.

With the win, both Columbia and Cornell end the regular season with conference records of 6-1, but the Big Red earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with the head-to-head win. The title is third in Cornell's program history — and the first since 2017 — and the second under head coach Silviu Tanasoiu.

For the Lions, the regular season ends with a third-straight Ivy League title and the program's 19th overall.

Cornell earned the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles, but the Lions answered back with singles wins at numbers two, five, and six thanks to Nicolas Kotzen, Abhishek Thorat, and Aditya Govila to take a 3-2 lead. However, the Big Red's Eric Verdes responded with a three-set victory at number three to set up the deciding match between Cornell's Rodrigo Fernandes and two-time NCAA singles national champion, Michael Zheng

In front of a raucous home crown, Fernandes outlasted fifth-ranked Zheng in a three-set showdown, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, to clinch the match and earn Cornell a share of the title.
