Cornell's Diakomihalis, Cornella, and Grey Claim Major Awards; Academic All-Ivy Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. — Following an impressive season that saw a number of nationally-ranked programs and individuals across the league, the 2022-23 Ivy League All-Ivy and major awards were announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis has been named Wrestler of the Year and Cornell freshman Vince Cornella has been selected as Rookie of the Year. Diakomihalis and Cornella are both joined by Big Red head coach Mike Grey who is honored as Coach of the Year.

Diakomihalis is the 21st member of the Big Red to receive this award since its inception in 1984. He is the only Ivy League wrestler to be named Wrestler of the Year four times in his career. Diakomihalis is a three-time NCAA National champion and was the second rookie in Cornell history to secure a national title. He also received unanimous first-team All-Ivy honors at 149.

Cornella is the 17th Cornell wrestler to be named Rookie of the Year. Cornella was also unanimously selected to the first team at 141, including a perfect 3-0 against Ivy League opponents.

Grey garners Coach of the Year honors in his second season at the helm of the Big Red program. Grey led Cornell to their 42nd overall title, the Big Red's second-straight Ivy wrestling title. Cornell has been consistently ranked at the top of the nation in the coaches’ polls throughout the season, this week coming in at No. 8.

Additionally, one Ivy League wrestling student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and in sport as members of the 2022-23 Ivy League Wrestling Academic All-Ivy team. Brown’s Ricky Cabanillas, Columbia’s Joshua Ogunsanya, Cornell’s Brendan Furman, Harvard’s Josh Kim, Penn’s Doug Zapf, and Princeton’s Quincy Monday were each named to the team.
