Softball All-Ivy, Postseason Awards Announced

Princeton, N.J. – Following a vote of the league’s eight head coaches, the Ivy League unveiled its All-Ivy softball teams and major award winners for the 2022 season Thursday morning.

Billie McFadyen became the fifth Dartmouth player in the last seven seasons of Ivy League softball to win Ivy League Player of the Year when the league’s awards were announced Thursday morning. Princeton, the 2022 Ivy League champion, collected the other Ivy League major awards with Alexis Laudenslager being voted a unanimous choice for Pitcher of the Year, Sophia Marsalo winning Rookie of the Year, and Lisa Van Ackeren winning Coach of the Year.

McFadyen helped lead Dartmouth to a third-place finish in the Ivy League with strong play both offensively and defensively. The senior led the Ivy League with 48 hits, was fourth with a .350 batting average, fourth with 25 RBIs, and top-10 in most other offensive categories, including slugging percentage, on-base percentage, OPS, runs scored and stolen bases. McFadyen also posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, recording 95 putouts and 56 assists without making an error. Her 151 chances tied for 11th most in the league and most amongst those with a flawless fielding percentage. The second baseman was also a unanimous selection to the All-Ivy First Team.

Laudenslager was the ace for the 2022 Ivy League Champion Princeton Tigers, posting a record of 8-2 in Ivy play. The San Diego, Calif., native led the Ivy League with a 1.96 ERA, the only pitcher to go sub-2.00, she was tops in opposing batting average, holding opponents to a 0.189 mark and was second with 128 strikeouts. The junior was one of three players to reach double-digit victories on the season, the others being Harvard’s Anna Reed, who joined Laudenslager on the All-Ivy First Team, and Dartmouth’s Brooke Plonka, who was a second teamer.

Marsalo made an instant impact in the Princeton lineup, settling in at first base and becoming another feature piece in an offense that boasts 0.300-plus hitters Adrienne Chang, Serena Starks, Allison Ha and Lauren Sablone. Marsalo was second on the team in batting average and her 0.346 mark was sixth in the Ivy League in 2022. The rookie trailed McFadyen by just three total hits, 45 versus 48, despite playing three fewer games. She ranked top-10 in the Ivy League in runs scored, total hits, runs batted in and doubles.

With the 2022 award, Van Ackeren has now been named the Ivy League Coach of the Year a league-leading three times since the award was established for the 2015 season. Van Ackeren led her Tigers to a 25-14-2 overall record and a 17-4 mark in Ivy League play, securing Princeton’s 20th Ivy League Championship and first since 2017.

Princeton had a high of six players named First Team All-Ivy with four marked as unanimous selections. In addition to Laudenslager and Marsalo at starting pitcher and first base, respectively, the Tigers were also represented by Serena Starks (outfield), Allison Ha (utility), Ali Blanchard (pitcher/utility) and Adrienne Chang (designated player). Laudenslager, Starks, Ha, and Chang were unanimous selections. The Tigers also had a pair of All-Ivy Second Team members in Grace Jackson and Lauren Sablone, bringing their total honorees to eight.

McFadyen was one of three Dartmouth players to be named All-Ivy First Team, the others being shortstop Kate Farren and outfielder Alaana Panu. The Big Green added pitcher Brooke Plonka as a Second Team All-Ivy member for their four overall honorees.

The rest of the All-Ivy First Team was comprised of two players from each Harvard and Penn. Harvard’s representatives were Anna Reed, the other First Team starting pitcher, and outfielder Lauren Bobowski. Reed led the Ivy League with 13 wins, on a 13-5 record, and was second to only Laudenslager with a 2.16 ERA. Penn’s First Team representatives were unanimous selection Sarah Schneider at catcher and third baseman Lauren McKelvey. Schneider hit 0.315 on the season and led the Ivy League in slugging percentage (0.662), OPS (1.080), home runs (11), runs scored (34) and RBIs (27).

Harvard had an additional four players, Katie Arrambide, Morgan Melito, Trina Hoang and Madi Mays, named Second Team All-Ivy. Brown and Cornell were well-represented on the All-Ivy Second Team. Brown had a trio of second teamers in Kat Clum, Elayna Tsiouplis, and Lauren Innerst, while Cornell’s pair of All-Ivy Second Team members were Lilly Travieso and Hanna Crist. Yale catcher Sam Goodcase rounded-out the 13-member All-Ivy Second Team.

Additionally, one Ivy League softball student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the field as members of the 2022 Ivy League Softball Academic All-Ivy team. Brown's Katie O'Leary, Columbia's Lauren Apollaro, Cornell's Emily McKinney, Dartmouth’s Maria Angelino, Harvard’s Morgan Melito, Penn's Laurel McKelvey, Princeton’s Adrienne Chang and Yale’s Carolyn Skotz were each named to the team.

Princeton and Harvard will square-off in the 2022 Ivy League Playoff Series with game one on Friday, May 13, and games two and possibly three on Saturday, May 14. The games are set to begin at 12 p.m. both days at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field.
