PRINCETON, N.J. — Princeton captured the Ivy League Softball Tournament title Saturday, defeating Columbia, 8-0, in five innings at Cynthia Lynn Paul ’94 Field. The Tigers broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the fourth inning and added three more in the fifth to clinch the title and punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
Cassidy Shaw delivered a championship-game shutout for Princeton, going all five innings while allowing four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Columbia put runners on second and third in the first after Caylene Nguyen singled and Sarah Mikami doubled, but Shaw escaped the jam and kept the Lions off the board the rest of the way. Shaw was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, earning the start in all three of Princeton’s contests.
After three scoreless innings, Princeton’s offense erupted in the fourth. Graciela Dominguez singled, Sonia Zhang followed with an infield hit, and Abby Hornberger drove in the game’s first two runs with a double through the right side. Jessica Phelps added an RBI double down the right-field line, Julieta Roa tripled home another run, and Roa scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
The Tigers sealed the championship in the fifth. Julia Dumais led off with a double, Dominguez singled, and Karis Ford brought in Dumais with an RBI single. Hornberger followed with a sacrifice fly, and Phelps capped the title-clinching win with an RBI single through the right side.
Phelps led Princeton’s 10-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Hornberger drove in a game-high three runs. Dominguez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Roa added an RBI triple. Columbia finished with four hits, including Mikami’s double, but left five runners on base.
The Tigers will learn their NCAA Regional destination during Sunday’s selection show, which will air on ESPN2 at 7 p.m.
