PRINCETON, N.J. -- With Ivy Madness set to start in just a couple of days, the Ivy League has released the major award winners and All-Ivy teams for the 2021-22 regular season. Members of No. 24 Princeton received three of the four major awards while the final honor went to a Harvard player.
Princeton guard
Abby Meyers was a unanimous selection for Ivy League Player of the Year after leading her Tigers to an undefeated regular season and the top seed in this weekend’s Ivy Madness. The senior finished second in the conference in scoring at 17.7 points per game and ninth in rebounding, pulling down 6.1 rebounds per game. She was one of the most efficient scorers in the Ivy League, shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from three-point range, ranking fourth and first, respectively, in the Ivy League.
Fellow Tiger
Ellie Mitchell was tabbed Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. The sophomore led the Ivy League in rebounding, averaging 10.1 rebounds per game, and ranked fourth in steals at 2.3 per game. Mitchell had a season-high six steals in just 19 minutes of play in a dominating win over Maine earlier this year. That was one of three games for Mitchell with at least five steals and one of 17 games with at least two steals.
Taking home Rookie of the Year honors was Harvard’s
Harmoni Turner. The freshman out of Mansfield, Texas was the fourth-leading scorer in the Ivy League this season, averaging 15.8 points per game. She was eighth in the league in both rebounding and assists at 6.6 and 2.6 per game, respectively, and second in steals per game at 2.5.
Princeton coach
Carla Berube is the Ivy League Coach of the Year for the second straight season, winning it the last time the Ivy League completed a season in 2019-20 as well. The Tigers wrapped-up the regular season at 22-4 and a perfect 14-0 in Ivy League play, their fourth-straight season with 20-plus wins overall and 10-plus wins in conference. Berube has now won Ivy League Coach of the Year in both seasons she’s been at the helm of Princeton.
Meyers was one of two unanimous selections to the All-Ivy First Team, the other being Yale junior
Camilla Emsbo. They’re joined by three additional juniors, Columbia’s
Kaitlyn Davis, Princeton’s
Julia Cunningham, and Penn’s
Kayla Padilla. Padilla is making her second straight appearance on the All-Ivy First Team while Emsbo moves up to the First Team from the All-Ivy Second Team in 2019-20. Padilla was the leading scorer and ranked third in assists per game in the Ivy League, at 18.5 points and 4.2 assists per game. Emsbo was the only player in the Ivy League to average a double-double in 2021-22, notching 14.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. She also averaged a league-high 2.3 blocks per game, which ranked 21
st in the country. Davis averaged 13.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per game and Cunningham averaged 13.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
