PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton senior guard
Abby Meyers has been named one of five finalists for the prestigious Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year award, Her Hoop Stats announced earlier today.
The Becky Hammon Award, presented by Her Hoop Stats, recognizes the nation’s best mid-major player, the first such award in women’s collegiate basketball.
Meyers is averaging 17.7 points on 63.4 percent shooting in 26 games this year. In addition, she is contributing 6.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks per contest. She has helped lead the Tigers to a 22-4 overall record and 14-0 mark in the Ivy League. Princeton received their first national ranking of the year at No. 24 after going undefeated in Ivy League play for the second consecutive season. In the latest NCAA NET Ranking, the Tigers sit at No. 21.
The four other finalists for the Becky Hammon Award are:
- Dyaisha Fair, Buffalo (So., G)
- Shaylee Gonzales, BYU (So., G)
- Jasmine Dickey, Delaware (G/F, Sr.)
- Kierstan Bell, FGCU (Jr., G)
To be eligible for the award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be “mid-major”. The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: AAC, ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC. Players are selected based on their on-court production in the 2019-20 NCAA season. The list is fluid and players may play their way on or off of the list over the course of the season.
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program’s only appearance to this day. In 2016 she was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history. Hammon was the second female coach in NBA history when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Additionally, Hammon is the only woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer League as well as the only woman to be a member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff.
