PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton senior attackman Michael Sowers was named the National Player of the Year following the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season.
Prior to the abrupt end to the 2020 season, five teams were ranked in the latest polls, including three teams in the top five. No. 2 Princeton and No. 3 Cornell were two of the last five remaining unbeaten teams in the country, while No. 5 Yale boasted a 3-1 mark and was a preseason favorite to reach championship weekend for the third straight season after winning the national championship in 2018.
Sowers scored 16 goals and added 31 assists, leaving him with 47 points in just five games, all of which were Princeton victories. The unbeaten Tigers finished third in the final Inside Lacrosse Maverik/media polls and the USILA coaches' poll and second in the US Lacrosse magazine poll.
Sowers averaged 9.40 points per game and 6.20 assists per game, both of which would have been NCAA single-season records. He is Princeton’s all-time leading scorer with 302 career points and ranks fifth on the League’s all-time chart.
Additionally, the Ivy League boasted nine rookies from five institutions were named to the
College Crosse All-Freshman team. Princeton led the way with four selections followed by a pair from Cornell while Brown and Penn each earned one selection apiece.
