PRINCETON, N.J. -- Seventeen former Ivy League men’s ice hockey players have competed in National Hockey League (NHL) games during the 2019-20 campaign. The 17 Ivies have accumulated 78 goals, 121 assists and 199 points in 563 NHL games this season.
Five of the Ivy League’s six participating institutions have been represented—with Harvard pacing all Ivy League programs with eight former student-athletes making appearances ahead of the NHL All-Star Break.
Fifth-year right wing
Garnet Hathaway tallied 12 points—via six goals and six assists—in 46 games for the Washington Capitals. The Brown alumnus is on pace for career-highs in goals, assists and points. Fellow Brown alum, rookie center
Sam Lafferty, added 10 points—via four goals and six assists—in 36 appearances for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Cornell is represented by the tandem of
Riley Nash and
Joakim Ryan in the NHL. Nash, a ninth-year center for the Columbus Blue Jackets, registered four goals and seven assists for a total of 11 points in 46 first-half appearances. The elder statesman among the Ivies in the NHL, Nash is on pace for his seventh-straight season of 64-or-more games played. Ryan, a third-year defenseman for the Los Angeles Kings, scored a goal and recorded two assists in 27 games played.

Biega, a sixth-year defenseman with the Detroit Red Wings, tallied an assist in 29 games played. Blackwell, a second-year center for the Nashville Predators, scored his first five NHL points in the first half with two goals and three assists in 15 games played. Third-year Minnesota Wild center Donato is on pace for career-highs in games played, goals and points, having accumulated 15 points—via nine goals and six assists—in 45 first-half showings. Rookie defenseman Fox of the New York Rangers leads all Ivies in the NHL with 21 assists. He also carded six goals in 48 games to rank second among Ivies with 27 points this season.
Third year-center Alexander Kerfoot of the Toronto Maple Leafs is in pursuit of his third-straight 40-point season with 19 points on eight goals and 11 assists in 44 games. Killorn, an eighth-year left wing for the Tampa Bay Lightning, reached the 125-goal and 175-assist plateaus during the first half, boasting 300 career points. He has already scored a career-high 20 goals and leads the Ivies in the NHL with 20 goals and 39 points on the season. Killorn ranks second among Ivies—behind Fox—with 19 assists on the year. Rookie defenseman Marino burst onto the NHL scene with 23 points—via four goals and 19 assists—in 38 appearances for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fourth-year left wing Jimmy Vesey registered 14 points on six goals and eight assists in 45 first-half appearances in his first season with the Buffalo Sabres.
The Princeton alumni trio of
Taylor Fedun,
Eric Robinson and
Max Veronneau combined for 62 games played prior to the NHL All-Star Break. Fedun, a seventh-year defenseman for the Dallas Stars, tied his career-high with seven assists and added two goals in 27 games played. Fedun needs to three second-half points to establish a new career-high in the category. Robinson, a third-year left wing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, registered his first NHL points in the first hal with nine points on five goals and four assists in 31 games played. He has already set career-highs in games played, goals, assists and points in 2019-20. Rookie Ottawa Senators right wing Veronneau appeared in four games.
Yale alumnus
John Hayden—a fourth-year center for the New Jersey Devils—had a goal and an assist in 25 games played. Fellow Bulldog
Alex Lyon—a third-year goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers—made one start in net, tallying 40 saves for a .900 save percentage and a 4.00 goals against average in 60 minutes of ice time.
Fifteen of 31 NHL clubs have featured a former Ivy League men’s ice hockey player this season.
Eleven Ivies began the 2019-20 season on NHL opening night rosters, while
22 made NHL appearances during the 2018-19 regular season.
