22 Ivies Appear in NHL Regular Season, 8 Bound for Stanley Cup Playoffs

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Eight Ivies begin their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup Wednesday, dotting the playoff rosters of six NHL clubs. During the 2018-19 regular-season, 22 Ivies were among the 325 former college hockey players to appear in an NHL game—tallying 250 points (94 G, 156 A) in 839 games played.

A pair of playoff clubs—the Columbus Blue Jackets and Dallas Stars—claim a pair of Ivy League hockey alumni on their postseason rosters.

Eighth-year center Riley Nash tallied 12 points (3 G, 9 A) in 78 games for the Blue Jackets this season. The Cornell product is 1-of-5 Ivies with playoff experience—three assists in 15 games—in this year’s 16-team affair. Rookie left wing Eric Robinson, who appeared in 13 games in his first professional season out of Princeton, will look for his first playoff action with Columbus.

Stanley Cup champion (2016, Pittsburgh Penguins) and 11th-year defenseman Ben Lovejoy returns to the Stanley Cup playoffs with the Dallas Stars after a mid-season trade from the New Jersey Devils. Lovejoy has appeared in 607 NHL contests—the most of any Ivy in this year’s postseason—and owns 15 points (5 G, 10 A) in 63 playoff games. The Dartmouth alum had nine points (2 G, 7 A) in 71 games played this season. Princeton product and sixth-year defenseman Taylor Fedun, who posted career highs with 54 games played and 11 points (4 G, 7 A) after joining the Stars from the Buffalo Sabres via trade, will make his postseason debut.

Brown alumnus and fourth-year right wing Garnet Hathaway will also make his Stanley Cup playoff debut after setting new career high-water marks with 76 games played and 19 points (11 G, 8 A) for the Calgary Flames.

A pair of Harvard alumni, who combined to pace all Ivies in every offensive category, will also return to the postseason. Seventh-year left wing Alex Killorn registered his sixth-straight season with 35-or-more points for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Crimson alumnus had 40 points (18 G, 22 A) in 82 games played, leading all Ivies in both games played and goals scored. Killorn has appeared in 64 postseason games, registering 40 points (20 G, 20 A), the most of any Ivy in this year’s postseason in each category. Second-year center Alexander Kerfoot posted back-to-back campaigns with 40-or-more points for the Colorado Avalanche. He tallied 42 points (15 G, 27 A) in 78 games played, pacing all Ivies in assists and points. Kerfoot had two goals in six postseason games in 2017-18.

Second-year defenseman Joakim Ryan of the San Jose Sharks rounds out the Ivy League postseason contingent. The Cornell alumnus appeared in 44 games this season, accumulating seven points via seven assists. He saw action in three postseason games in 2017-18.

After opening the season with 15 players on NHL rosters, 5-of-6 Ivy League men's ice hockey programs are represented in this year's Stanley Cup playoffs—Brown (1), Cornell (2), Dartmouth (1), Harvard (2) and Princeton (2). In total, 22 Ivies made NHL appearances during the 2018-19 regular season, with five making their NHL debuts. Three Ivies—Princeton’s Ryan Kuffner, Josh Teves and Max Veronneau—were among the 14 players to get a taste of the NHL following the completion of their NCAA seasons in 2018-19.
