Princeton Tops 2019 Women's Lacrosse Preseason Poll

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton was picked to earn its sixth-straight Ivy League title in the 2019 Ivy League Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Media Poll. The Tigers, who won the 2018 Ivy League Women’s Lacrosse Tournament, topped the preseason poll for the third-straight year with 124 points and 12-of-16 first-place votes.

Princeton got the nod over fellow 2018 Ivy League champion Penn, which finished second with 115 points and four first-place votes. The Tigers and Quakers have shared the Ivy League title in four of the past five seasons, with Princeton winning outright in 2015 and Cornell joining the duo as an Ivy League champion in 2017.

Penn—which has earned at least a share of 11-of-12 League crowns dating back to 2007—has appeared in 12-straight NCAA Tournaments, the fifth-longest active streak in NCAA Division I, trailing only Maryland (28), Virginia (23), Northwestern (15) and North Carolina (14). Princeton has been featured in 17-of-19 NCAA Tournaments since 2000, including six-straight.

Dartmouth, which narrowly missed last year’s NCAA Tournament field, tallied 96 points to sit third in the preseason ledger.

Princeton and Penn were ranked among the top 10 in both the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Women’s Preseason Top 20 and the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division I Preseason Poll. Dartmouth also earned mention in the IWLCA preseason edition.

The Ivy League is 1-of-3 conferences to boast a pair of top 10 teams and at least three teams ranked among the top 25 in the national preseason polls, joining the ACC and the Big Ten.

Cornell, a year removed from back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, was picked to round out the projected 2019 Ivy League Women’s Lacrosse Tournament field with 68 total points.

Penn has competed in all nine Ivy League Women’s Lacrosse Tournaments to date, while Princeton (8), Cornell (7), Harvard (6), Dartmouth (5) and Columbia (1) have also made appearances. Brown and Yale are still looking for their first Ivy League tournament berths in 2019.

The 2019 Ivy League Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Tournaments will take place on May 3 and 5 in New York City on the campus of Columbia University. Ticket information and game times will be available in the near future. Stay tuned to IvyLeague.com for the latest information on the 2019 Ivy League Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse Tournaments.

The bottom half of the poll featured a cluster of the fifth-through-eighth-place teams—Brown (50 points), Harvard (47 points), Columbia (42 points) and Yale (34 points)—which were separated by just 16 points.

Since the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship began in 1982, the Ivy League has received multiple bids 28 times, including each of the past eight seasons. The League has produced four national champions and 24 Final Four teams all-time.

The 2019 campaign gets underway on Feb. 15-16 with all eight teams in action.
