PRINCETON, N.J. – Four Ivy League women’s soccer standouts were named to the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Division I Women’s Scholar All-East Teams. Brown’s Kayla Thompson and Sydney Cummings were named to the first-team, while Columbia’s Amalya Johnson earned second-team honors and Dartmouth’s Bonnie Shea was slotted on the third team.
29-of-40 members of the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Soccer Scholar All-East Region Teams claim at least a 3.50 grade point average, while Thompson is one of eight honorees to boast a 3.90 or higher GPA.
Cummings – A three-time All-Ivy selection – boasts a 3.45 grade point average and is studying English. The junior helped lead the Bears to a historic season in which the team earned its first Ivy League title and NCAA appearance since 1994. Cummings played a critical role in helping the Bears tally 13 shutouts in 2019, the most clean sheets in program history. Cummings became the
Bears’ 10th All-American in program history and the first to earn the honor since 2000.
Thompson – a First-Team All-Ivy selection in 2019 – is studying public health and owns a 3.95 grade point average. The junior distinguished herself as one of the top goalkeepers in the nation, ranking sixth in the NCAA in save percentage (.892) and ninth in GAA (0.44). For the season, she registered a 0.44 GAA, seven goals allowed, .892 save percentage, 10-2-3 record, and nine shutouts. Her nine shutouts rank third in a single season in Brown history.
Johnson is majoring in physics and carries a 3.76 grade point average. The First-Team All-Ivy defender started all 16 matches and helped the Lions post five shutouts in 2019 including two key clean sheets in Ivy action.
Shea earns Scholar All-Region third team honors after started all 15 matches she played and was an important piece in the Big Green allowing the second fewest goals in the conference (13). Shea helped the team offensively as well with a goal and an assist in Dartmouth's final game against Cornell. The junior defender is studying neuroscience and owns a 3.92 grade point average.
Following one of the most successful women’s soccer seasons in recent history, the league finished the fifth-strongest conference in Division I women’s soccer (out of 32) and totaled the most non-conference wins (52) in league history.
To be considered for Scholar All-Region status, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30. The student-athlete must also be a junior or above in academic standing, have started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contributed to her team.
