PRINCETON, N.J. -- Sixteen former Ivy League men’s ice hockey players have competed in National Hockey League (NHL) games during the 2018-19 campaign. The 16 Ivies have accumulated 51 goals, 82 assists and 133 points in 464 NHL games this season.
Each of the six participating institutions have been represented—with Harvard pacing all Ivy League programs with five former student-athletes making appearances ahead of the NHL All-Star break.
Fourth-year right wing
Garnet Hathaway tallied seven points—via five goals and two assists—in 45 games for the Calgary Flames. After doubling his career goal output in the first half, the Brown alumnus is on pace for career-highs in games played and points.
Cornell trailed only Harvard with 83 NHL appearances among the trio of
Jacob MacDonald,
Riley Nash and
Joakim Ryan. MacDonald played in two games for the Florida Panthers, scoring a goal in his NHL debut on Oct. 6. Nash, an eighth-year center, registered a goal and five assists while appearing in 47-of-48 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ryan, a second-year defenseman, also added four assists in 34 games with the San Jose Sharks.
Eleventh-year defenseman
Ben Lovejoy is on pace for his first double-digit point season since
winning the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015-16. The Dartmouth product, who surpassed 500 NHL games played with 43 appearances for the New Jersey Devils during the first half, has accumulated a goal and five assists on the season.
A League-high five Crimson alumni have donned an NHL sweater this season—
Alex Biega,
Ryan Donato,
Alexander Kerfoot,
Alex Killorn and
Jimmy Vesey. Biega, a fifth-year defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks, tallied four assists in 14 games played. Donato, a rookie center for the Boston Bruins, registered nine points—via six goals and three assists—in 34 appearances. Second-year Colorado Avalanche center Kerfoot saw the ice in 46-of-50 first half contests, contributing an Ivy League-best 26 points via nine goals and an Ivy League-high 17 assists. Seventh-year left wing Killorn was the lone Ivy to feature in each of his team’s first half contests, compiling 25 points via an Ivy League-best 11 goals and 14 assists in 49 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Killorn needs just two lamp-lighters to reach the 100-goal plateau for his career and two helpers to surpass 150 assists. 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner Vesey, now in his third season as a left wing for the New York Rangers, appeared in 47-of-48 first half contests. Vesey tallied 24 points via an Ivy League-high 11 goals and 13 assists.
Fourth-year goaltender
Mike Condon, sixth-year defenseman
Taylor Fedun and rookie left wing
Eric Robinson have represented Princeton in the NHL this season. Condon earned the start in both of his appearances for the Ottawa Senators during the first half, compiling an .800 save percentage and 6.40 goals against average in 76 minutes. Fedun was
traded to the Dallas Stars on Nov. 10 and has appeared in 26 games for the club, adding two goals and four assists. He needs just one appearance and one point in the second half to match his career-highs in both categories. Robinson, who skated in three contests for the Columbus Blue Jackets, is still searching for his first NHL point.
Three Yale alumni—
Kenny Agostino,
John Hayden and
Alex Lyon—also saw NHL action during the first half. Fifth-year left wing Agostino has appeared in 35 games for the Montreal Canadiens since being
called up on Nov. 7, tallying two goals and nine assists. Third-year right wing John Hayden has two goals and an assist through 35 games with the Chicago Blackhawks. Lyon, a second-year goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers, accumulated an .806 save percentage and 5.07 goals against average in 76 minutes across two games.
Fifteen of 31 NHL clubs have featured a former Ivy League men’s ice hockey player this season.
Fifteen Ivies began the 2018-19 season on NHL opening night rosters, while
