Eight Ivies Begin Quest for Stanley Cup

PRINCETON, NJ. -- Eight Ivies begin their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup Wednesday, dotting the playoff rosters of seven NHL clubs. During the 2017-18 regular season, twenty-two Ivies were among the 310 former college hockey players to appear in an NHL game—tallying 250 points (95 G, 155 A) in 814 games played.

For the second-straight year, the Boston Bruins feature multiple Ivy League hockey alumni on their playoff roster. Seventh-year center Riley Nash tallied a career-high 41 points (15 G, 26 A) in 76 games for the Bruins this season. The Cornell product is 1-of-4 Ivies with playoff experience—two assists in six games last season—in this year’s 16-team affair. First-year center Ryan Donato will make his playoff debut after a 58-point 2017-18 campaign. He had nine points (5 G, 4 A) in 12 games for the Boston Bruins, 43 points (26 G, 17 A) in 29 games for the Harvard Crimson and six points (5 G, 1 A) in five games for the United States Olympic Team this season.

First-year center Alexander Kerfoot will join former Crimson teammate Donato in making his playoff debut after compiling 43 points (19 G, 24 A)—second among Ivies and 11th among all NHL rookies—in 79 games for the Colorado Avalanche.

Fresh off a run to the ECAC Hockey Tournament championship, first-year left wing Eric Robinson is 1-of-4 Ivies making his NHL playoff debut, after just one game in a Columbus Blue Jackets uniform. The Princeton product is 18 days removed from his last game as a Tiger—a 4-2 loss to eventual Midwest Regional champion and Frozen Four participant Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament that capped a 31-point (17 G, 14 A) senior season.

Stanley Cup champion (2016, Pittsburgh Penguins) and 10th-year defenseman Ben Lovejoy returns to the Stanley Cup playoffs in his second season with the New Jersey Devils. The Dartmouth alum tallied eight points (2 G, 6 A) in 57 regular-season games and owns 14 points (4 G, 10 A) in 58 career playoff appearances.

First-year defenseman Joakim Ryan of the San Jose Sharks is the final Ivy making his NHL playoff debut. The Cornell alum accumulated 12 points (3 G, 9 A) in 62 regular-season games.

Sixth-year left wing Alex Killorn of the Tampa Bay Lightning boasts the most career Stanley Cup playoff points of any Ivy in this year’s postseason—33 points (15 G, 18 A) in 47 playoff games. The Harvard product also tallied the most points of an Ivy during this year’s regular season—47 points (15 G, 32 A) in 82 games.

The elder statesman among Ivies in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs is 13th-year center Dominic Moore of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Moore claims 29 points (12 G, 17 A) in 99 postseason appearances and registered 12 points (6 G, 6 A) in 50 games played this season.

After opening the season with 15 players on NHL rosters, 4-of-6 Ivy League men's ice hockey programs are represented in this year's Stanley Cup playoffs. In total, 22 Ivies made NHL appearances during the 2017-18 regular season, with six making their NHL debuts. Two Ivies—Harvard’s Donato and Princeton’s Robinson—were among a record 16 players to get a taste of the NHL following the completion of their NCAA seasons in 2017-18.
