Wrestling Postseason Awards, All-Ivy Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Cornell swept the Ivy League wrestling postseason awards after a vote by the six head coaches.

Big Red freshman Yianni Diakomihalis was unanimously selected Wrestler and Rookie of the Year. He is the second-ever wrestler to earn both awards in the same season, joining former Cornell standout Troy Nickerson in 2006. Diakomihalis is the eighth-straight Big Red to receive Wrestler of the Year and the 16th to earn Rookie of the Year.

For the fourth-straight year, Cornell coach Rob Koll was selected Coach of the Year, marking his second as the sole recipient and first since 2014-15.

Diakomihalis (141- Rochester, N.Y.) became Cornell's second ever freshman NCAA champion, joining Kyle Dake. Diakomihalis defeated the top seed in the tournament and capped off a historic season by earning the 141-pound crown in Cleveland.

Koll previously shared Coach of the Year in 2015-16 and 2016-17 with Princeton head coach Chris Ayres. Koll guided the Big Red (13-2, 5-0 Ivy) to its 16th straight Ivy League Title and the team placed 2nd at the EIWA Championships in Hempstead, N.Y. This second-place finish came after an unprecedented eleven straight EIWA titles.

FIRST-TEAM ALL-IVY
Cornell led the way with five wrestlers on the first team. All five Big Red honorees were unanimously selected: Diakomihalis was joined by sophomore Noah Baughman (125 - Doylestown, Ohio), junior Chas Tucker (133 - Worcester, Mass), freshman Max Dean (184 - Lowell, Mich.) and freshman Ben Darmstadt (197 - Elyria, Ohio). Dean is the brother of former Cornell wrestler Gabe Dean who was selected Rookie of the Year in 2013-14 and Wrestler of the Year in 2014-15 and 2016-17.

Princeton had two members unanimous selected to the first team in sophomore Matthew Kolodzik (149 - Bellbrook, Ohio) and junior Mike D'Angelo (157 - Commack, N.Y.). Kolodzik was last season’s Rookie of the Year.

Columbia, Harvard and Penn rounded out the first team. Lions senior heavyweight Garrett Ryan (285 – Scottsdale, Ariz.) was a unanimous selection for the third straight year, while Penn senior 165-pounder May Bethea (Trenton, N.J.) earned first team honors after earning second team honors last year and Harvard senior 174-pounder Josef Johnson (Piscataway, N.J.) earned his first career All-Ivy honor.
