An Ivy Minute

Returning home; serving the community; Olympic lacrosse; class acts; a major upset. Read those stories in this week’s Ivy Minute.
WELCOME BACK
Brown hired former player and assistant coach James Perry as its head coach. Perry was a part of two Bears championships, first as a quarterback (1999), then as an assistant coach (2008). He also served as an assistant at Dartmouth and the offensive coordinator at Princeton. Perry becomes the fourth Ivy alum to serve as head coach of his alma mater, joining Cornell (Dave Archer ‘05), Dartmouth (Buddy Teevens ‘79) and Princeton (Bob Surace ‘90). Perry’s former boss and now fellow head coach is excited about the hire.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Two Ivy League women’s basketball teams were doing their part to serve their community last week. Penn jumped in to help with the Pennsylvania Special Olympics, while Harvard visited a local elementary school, catching the eye of former Crimson hooper and current Attorney General of Massachusetts Maura Healey.
MORE OLYMPIC IVIES?
Lacrosse took one step closer to becoming an Olympic sport, as the International Olympic Committee granted provisional recognition to the Federation of International Lacrosse. Should that come to pass, at the 2024 Summer Games in Los Angeles, the number of Olympic Ivies could well surpass the 66 that competed in the 2016 Olympic Games. Needless to say, the lacrosse world was very excited, including three Ivies in Dartmouth women’s lacrosse alum and Harvard head coach Devon Wills, Princeton men’s lacrosse alum Tim Murdoch and Cornell men’s lacrosse alum Rob Pannell.
STAY CLASSY
A pair of Ivy League men’s basketball standouts are candidates for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award, as Cornell’s Matt Morgan and Yale’s Trey Phills received the honor. Morgan was also one of four Ivies on the watchlist for the Lou Henson Player of the Year award, as well as catching the eye of ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla.
MAJOR UPSET
Princeton wrestling defeated eighth-ranked Lehigh, 21-19, getting a road win over the Mountain Hawks for the first time in program history. The victory marked the first by the Tigers over Lehigh since 1968. Two Ivy teams appear in the latest national rankings; 16-time defending champion Cornell is No. 6, and Princeton is receiving votes (27th overall).
