Men's Tennis All-Ivy, Postseason Awards Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Yale's Tyler Lu and Dartmouth's Charlie Broom received the Ivy League men's tennis postseason awards following a vote of the Ancient Eight head coaches.

Cornell's Silviu Tanasoiu was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year, Yale senior Tyler Lu was selected as the Player of the Year and Dartmouth freshman Charlie Broom was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year.

After returning from an injury that kept him out during the entire 2016 spring campaign, Lu (Irvine, Calif.) posted a 26-6 singles mark en route to a unanimous First Team All-Ivy nod in singles. He went 18-2 during the spring season, including an unblemished 7-0 mark at the No. 1 position in League play. The Irvine, Calif., native is currently the No. 63-ranked singles player in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's National Singles Ranking. He claims the Ivy League's best single win on the season—a three-set upset (6-2, 4-6, 7-5) of then-No. 13 ranked Florian Lakat of Cal on March 22.

Lu is the fourth Bulldog to be recognized as Player of the Year, joining Steve Berke (2001), Brandon Wai (2006, 2007) and Marc Powers (2010).

Broom (Hertfordshire, England) ascended through the Big Green lineup throughout the spring campaign—beginning in the No. 4 position and vaulting up to No. 1 for the final five matches. He competed in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions during Ivy League play, compiling a 3-1 mark with his other three matches going unfinished. Broom was 23-6 in singles play this season, while also tallying an 18-7 mark in double competition. He and doubles partner Max Fliegner claimed a 6-1 win over Columbia's then-No. 36 ranked tandem of Richard and Victor Pham on April 16.

Broom is the third Big Green freshman to earn Rookie of the Year accolades over the past four seasons, following Dovydas Sakinis (2014) and Ciro Riccardi (2015).

Sixth-year head coach Tanasoiu led Cornell to a share of its second Ivy title and its first-ever at-large selection to the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship. The Big Red finished the regular season with the second-most wins in program history at 21-3, including a 6-1 mark in League play. Cornell has spent 10-straight weeks in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's National Team Ranking and currently sits at No. 26. Tanasoiu is the Big Red's first Coach of the Year selection since the award began in 2015.

Three student-athletes were First Team All-Ivy selections in both singles and doubles—Columbia senior Shawn Hadavi (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.), Columbia sophomore Victor Pham (Saratoga, Calif.) and Harvard junior Kenneth Tao (San Jose, Calif.). Hadavi (No. 91) and Victor Pham (No. 58) joined Yale's Lu as unanimous First Team All-Ivy selections in singles—both are also currently ranked among the Oracle/ITA top 100.

Columbia, which has captured at least a share of four-straight Ivy titles, paced the Ancient Eight with six All-Ivy honorees. Joining dual All-Ivy selections Hadavi and Victor Pham were doubles players senior Richard Pham (First Team, Saratoga, Calif.) and freshman Jackie Tang (Second Team, Hong Kong).

Fellow Ivy League champions Harvard and Cornell also claimed multiple award winners. The Crimson produced three First Team All-Ivy selections in dual honoree Tao and doubles player senior Brian Yeung (Hong Kong). The Big Red tallied four All-Ivy distinctions in First Team All-Ivy doubles player and Second Team All-Ivy singles player senior Colin Sinclair (Brisbane, Australia) and Second Team All-Ivy selections freshman Lev Kazakov (singles, Moscow, Russia) and senior Chris Vrabel (doubles, Centerville, Va.).

Penn sophomore Kyle Mautner (Greenwich, Conn.) was the final First Team All-Ivy singles player, while teammate junior Josh Pompan (Salinas, Calif.) was a Second Team All-Ivy selection in the same discipline.

Princeton tied Cornell for second among all Ivies with four All-Ivy selections—all on the Second Team. Senior Alex Day (Vancouver, B.C.) was recognized for both his singles and doubles play, while senior Tom Colautti (London, England) earned the distinction in singles and junior Luke Gamble (Boise, Idaho) claimed the recognition in doubles.

Yale freshman Dylan King (Portland, Ore.) earned a place on the All-Ivy second team in singles, giving the Bulldogs two honorees.

Brown boasted two Second Team All-Ivy doubles players in seniors Lucas Da Silveira (Incline Village, Nev.) and Gregory Garcia (Poway, Calif.).
