Multiple Ivies Make Runs To Round of 16 In ITA All-American Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. — Ivy League men's and women's tennis tennis continued to showcase their talents on the national stage as two singles players and one doubles team made runs to the Round of 16 in the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships last week.

Two singles and one doubles team competed in the women's championship, hosted in Cary, N.C. from September 19-27. Harvard's Stephanie Yakoff advanced to the Round of 16 in both the main singles draw and the doubles draw alongside teammate Kavya Karra.

Yakoff got her singles run started with a win over No. 47 Raquel Caballero Chica of TCU, 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round before defeating Arizona State's Emilija Tverigonaite in the round of 32, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Yakoff then fell to seventh-seeded Amelie Van Impe to end her run.

Yakoff and Karra upset the No. 16 nationally ranked duo of Mia Slama and Lavinia Tanasie in a third-set tiebreaker in the opening round of the doubles main draw. The Harvard duo came back from 5-3 down in the opening set to win 7-5. Then the NC State duo responded with a 6-4 second-set win. Finally, the Harvard seniors prevailed 12-10 to move on to the Round of 16.

Columbia's Margot Phanthala fell in the round of 64 to South Carolina's Helena Buchald (5-7, 1-6) before responding with three consecutive victories over No. 52 Gian Octa of Boston College, 7-6, 6-2, and No. 15 Emilija Tverijonaite of Arizona State, 6-4, 7-5. Lastly Phanthala continued her run with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 11 Jana Salah of Florida to advance to the consolation Round of 16 where her run ultimately ended.

The men's championship took place in Tulsa, Okla. as three singles players and one doubles team also competed for the league in the main draw.

Cornell's Rodrigo Fernandes, fell in the round of 16, but not before he earned a straight-set victory over UCLA's Andy Nguyen in the opening round and a three-set win over No. 32 Andres Santamarta Roig of Virginia in the round of 32.

Two Harvard student-athletes (Nathan Blokhin and Rohan Murali) competed in the singles main draw, however, both fell in the round of 64. Blokhin would go on to defeat Florida State's Azariah Risher in the consolation draw, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Penn's Shaurya Bharadwaj and Vojtech Vales fell in the opening round of the main draw, but bounced back with three straight victories in the consolation draw. The duo defeated No. 7 Romain Gales and Bruno Kuzuhara of Clemson, 3-6, 7-6, 10-7, before defeating Danial Rakhmatukkayev and Taym Alazmeh of Michigan State, 6-4, 7-6(6), to reach the consolation semifinals.
