Championship Matchups Set at First-Ever Ivy League Squash Tournaments

PRINCETON, N.J. — No. 1 Penn and No. 2 Harvard advanced to the men’s championship match, while No. 1 Princeton and No. 2 Penn moved on to the women’s final with wins Saturday at the inaugural Ivy League Squash Tournaments, held at Princeton University’s Racquet and Recreation Fieldhouse.

In the men’s semifinals, No. 1 Penn defeated No. 4 Yale, 6-3, behind four straight-set victories and a pair of five-game wins. Omar Hafez clinched a tight 3-2 decision over Tad Carney at the top spot, and Alexander Dartnell also went the distance in a 3-2 win over Rohan Gondi. Salman Khalil, Zane Patel and Varun Chitturi each earned 3-0 victories as the Quakers secured their place in the final despite wins from Yale’s Rishi Srivastava, Oliver Velasco and Jack O’Flynn.

Harvard, the No. 2 seed, delivered the most decisive result of the round, topping No. 1 Princeton, 8-1. Denis Gilevskiy and Christian Capella each rallied to five-game victories, while David Costales and Maddox Moxham won in straight games. Jacob Lin added a two-game win, and Ishant Shah closed out the Crimson’s dominant performance. Princeton’s lone point came from Justin Cheng, who outlasted Segev Rome in five games.

On the women’s side, top-seeded Princeton rolled past No. 4 Cornell, 8-1. Alexandra Jaffe, Caroline Eielson, Liyen Teoh, Hermione Cao and Sonya Sasson all won in straight games, while Charlotte Bell claimed a four-game match and Emma Trauber and Samantha Jaffe secured wins shortened by retirement. Cornell’s Yee Xin Ying earned a straight-game win at No. 1.

The most dramatic semifinal came in the women’s 2-3 matchup, where No. 2 Penn edged No. 3 Harvard, 5-4. Malak Khafagy set the tone with a five-game victory at No. 1, and Sohaila Ismail and Alexandra Stoddard added hard-fought 3-2 wins -- with Stoddard clinching the match for Penn.  Hailey Shing-Fei Wong and Ashna Tumulari contributed additional points as the Quakers survived strong performances from Harvard’s Lucie Stefanoni, Saran Nghiem, Dixon Hill and Molly Stoltz to book a spot in the championship match.

Both finals matches are set to start at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
