Brown Downs No. 8 Rhode Island, All Ivies Complete First Game of Ivy Play

PRINCETON, N.J. — The third weekend of Ivy League football concluded as The Ivy League now holds a record of 10-6 in non-conference play, and is 3-2 against teams from last year’s FCS field with Brown’s win over No. 8 Rhode Island.
 
All Ivies have now played one league game as Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale sit at 1-0 in the conference standings.
 
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3
BROWN 28, NO. 8 RHODE ISLAND 21
7 p.m. // Pawtucket, R.I. // Centreville Bank Stadium 
  • Brown (2-1, 0-1 Ivy) caused four turnovers to claim its first Governor’s Cup win since 2017, taking down No. 8 Rhode Island (4-2, 2-0 CAA) 28-21.
  • Quarterback James Murphy was 20-for-27 through the air for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
  • Running back Matt Childs added two rushing scores on the ground.
  • North Kingstown, R.I., native Ty Pezza led Brown with six receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown.
  • Defensive Back Elias Archie had four tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and the game-sealing interception. 
PRINCETON 17, COLUMBIA 10
7:30 p.m. // Princeton, N.J. // Powers Field at Princeton Stadium
  • Princeton (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) scored 17 unanswered to open Ivy play with a 17-10 victory over Columbia (1-2, 0-1 Ivy).
  • Tigers linebacker Marco Scarano led the team with 11 tackles and an interception.
  • Kai Colón and Blaine Hipa spilt time at quarterback for Princeton. Colón threw for 145 yards, while Hipa had 98 through the air.
  • Columbia linebacker Jack Smiechowski recorded a game-high 15 tackles and registered his third interception of the season.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4
rv YALE 13, NO. 9 LEHIGH 31
12 p.m. // Bethlehem, Pa. // Goodman Stadium
  • Yale (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) had a strong effort on the road against Lehigh (6-0, 2-0 Patriot), forcing a one-possession game midway through the third quarter, but ultimately fell by a score of 31-13.
  • Yale quarterback Dante Reno threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns, both to Nico Brown (27- and 44-yard scores).
  • Running back Josh Pitsenberger led the Bulldogs with 63 yards on 18 carries.
  • Inumidun Ayo-Durojaiye led the Bulldogs’ defense with 13 total tackles.
PENN 36, rv DARTMOUTH 24
1 p.m. // Philadelphia, Pa. // Franklin Field
  • Trailing 14-3 early on, Penn (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) outscored Dartmouth (2-1, 0-1 Ivy) the rest of the way, 33-10, to defeat the Big Green, 36-24.
  • Liam O’Brien led the Quakers’ offense, completing 16 of 21 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 99 yards and two scores, accounting for four total touchdowns.
  • Bisi Owens and Cadin Olsen caught touchdown passes for Penn, with Owens leading the receiving attack with 46 yards on four receptions.
  • Defensively, Penn’s John Lista led Penn with 15 total tackles, and Ezra Fearon grabbed a key interception as the Quakers forced two turnovers.
  • For Dartmouth, all three touchdowns came on the ground as quarterback Grayson Saunier ran for two while D.J. Crowther added the third.
CORNELL 21, COLGATE 41
2 p.m. // Ithaca, N.Y. // Schoellkopf Field
  • After scoring 15 points unanswered in the second and third quarters, Cornell’s (0-3, 0-1 Ivy) comeback fell short as the Big Red lost to Colgate (2-3, 1-0 Patriot) by a score of 41-21.
  • Quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio led Cornell’s offense, completing 23 of 38 passes for 225 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 91 yards and a score on 18 carries.
  • Wide receiver Doryn Smith was Bass-Sulpizio’s top target, catching seven passes for 64 yards and a 13-yard touchdown.
#25 HARVARD 59, HOLY CROSS 24
2 p.m. // Worcester, Mass. // Fitton Field
  • Harvard (3-0, 1-0 Ivy) put on a dominant performance to earn their third win of the season, defeating Holy Cross (0-6, 0-1 Patriot), 59-24.
  • Harvard quarterback Jaden Craig led the way, completing 19 of 27 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns, while Dante Torres added another touchdown through the air.
  • The Crimson ground attack was explosive as Jordan Harris rushed for 91 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown run, while Xaviah Bascon (one) and Maddux Reid (two) each added rushing scores.
  • Brady Blackburn was Harvard’s top receiver, posting 114 yards and two touchdowns on five catches.
  • Harvard’s defense set the tone early, forcing three interceptions and recording two sacks for 19 yards.
