IVIES IN PARIS UPDATES PAGE
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ivy League will continue to build upon its storied success in the Olympic Games as 114 past, present and future Ivy League athletes and coaches will compete in the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, France. The Games will begin on Friday, July 26 and last through Sunday, August 11.
The Ivy League contingent includes 105 Olympians, four Paralympians and five coaches competing across 20 sports, representing all eight of the Ivy League institutions and 23 participating countries— United States (65), Great Britain (8), Canada (8), Australia (6), Nigeria (3), Norway (3), Egypt (2), Greece (2), Germany (2), New Zealand (2), Bermuda (1), Colombia (1), Denmark (1), Gambia (1), Ireland (1), Kosovo (1), Puerto Rico (1), Slovenia (1), South Africa (1), Switzerland (1), Thailand (1), Turkey (1), and Uganda (1). Each Ivy League institution has at least five representatives heading to Paris.
The Ivy League has a storied tradition of Olympic success, consistently ranking amongst the top NCAA conferences in Olympic participation. The League has accumulated 503 medals all-time, including 11 during Tokyo 2020, nine during PyeongChang 2018 and six during Rio 2016. If the Ivy League were its own country, it would rank 16th all-time in medals.
The 2024 Ivy League footprint on Team USA is as follows:
- In all, 65 participants, including Olympians, Paralympians, alternates, and coaches were named to Team USA
- 47 current and former Ivy League student-athletes will be competing on the U.S. Olympic team, which is the fourth-highest of the 32 Division I athletic conferences and 45 participating athletic conferences. The Ivy League is one of three conferences in the country to have its entire membership represented on the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team (Ivy League, Big Ten, SEC).
- 41 Ivies will be returning from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, including eight of the Ivy League’s 10 medalists.
- Harvard is the only non-power four school in the top-10 list of contributors to Team USA with 15 U.S. Olympians.
- All eight institutions will have representation on the U.S. Olympic Rowing Team, composing exactly half of Team USA's roster. The Ivy League is the only conference that can make this claim in any sport.
- Sixty percent of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Fencing team competed in the Ivy League; this includes representation from three schools; Columbia, Harvard and Princeton. Including the replacement athletes, a total of 13 U.S. Olympic fencers have competed or will compete in the Ivy League. With this, the 2024 U.S. Olympic men’s saber team is believed to be the first time in history that an entire Olympic fencing squad was compromised of athletes from a single institution (Harvard). Eli Dershwitz, Mitchell Saron and Filip Dolegiewicz (alternate) have already completed their Crimson careers, with Colin Heathcock enrolling this fall.
- Six Ivy League athletes will compete on the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team. This includes 2020 Olympic bronze medalist in the women’s 200m, Gabrielle Thomas (Harvard), who led Ivies with two medals at the Toyko Olympic Games, posted a world-leading time (21.78) at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.
- For the first time in history, the Ivy League will have two water polo athletes representing Team USA; Ashleigh Johnson and Jovana Sekulic, both Princeton Tigers.
Three-hundred twenty-nine medals will be distributed in 32 disciplines during Paris, with Ivies competing in 15 of 32 Olympic sports: athletics, basketball, basketball 3x3, breaking, cycling, fencing, football, rhythmic gymnastics, rowing, rugby sevens, sailing, swimming, triathlon, water polo and wrestling. Ivies will also participate in para rowing, para cycling, para swimming, and wheelchair tennis.
