Princeton Claims Men's Soccer Tournament Title

PHILADELPHIA — A week after the Penn Quakers secured an undefeated Ivy League season and the top seed in the 2024 Ivy League Men’s Soccer Tournament by defeating Princeton, 1-0, the two teams met this afternoon for the Ivy League crown. This time, the Princeton Tigers exacted their revenge and took down Penn, 3-1, to win the 2024 Ivy League Tournament title and the Ivy League’s automatic bid to the 2024 College Cup.

Princeton showed little fatigue from their thrilling overtime victory Friday night, controlling the pace of play and playing mostly in their offensive half of the field from the opening kickoff. The Tigers took the game’s first four shots with the fourth being the one that put Princeton on the scoreboard. Dash Papez fired a low shot that was saved by Penn goalie Phillip Falcon III, but Falcon III was unable to secure the rebound as Nico Nee followed-up the shot and immediately buried the shot to make it a 1-0 game.

The Tigers continued to control the opening half, using a combination of a smothering defense and opportunistic offensive players to threaten Penn time and time again. Princeton took six more shots after the Nee goal and didn’t allow a single Penn shot attempt until the 29th minute, the first of just two Quaker shots in the first half, as the game went to halftime with Princeton leading 1-0.

Penn came out of the locker rooms with more energy and immediately went on the offensive only to see Jack Wagoner’s shot go wide left. After that initial burst, the game again settled into a more defensive battle, that is, until Princeton’s Ian Nunez found space off a feed from Jack Jasinski to double the Tiger advantage to 2-0.

The Quakers, playing in front of their home fans, did not go away quietly and started to amplify their attacking position, but that opened up counter opportunities for Princeton, and, in the 76th minute, one of those counterattacks just about put the game out of reach. Daniel Ittycheria, who had given the Penn defense problems all game, taking seven shots in the game to that point, found space yet again and this time buried the opportunity to make it a 3-0 game. Roka Tsunehara assisted on the goal.

Penn did get one back, with Leo Burney scoring in the 84th minute to break the clean sheet, but it was too little, too late for the Quakers as Princeton ran out the clock to close out the 3-1 victory to claim the 2024 Ivy League Tournament title.

Princeton is into the 2024 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship, also known as the 2024 College Cup, as the Ivy League’s automatic qualifier, however, Penn, who entered the weekend 5th in the RPI rankings, and Cornell, who lost in overtime to Princeton Friday night and is ranked 23rd in RPI, will both wait to learn their fate during the NCAA Selection Show, slated to start at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 18th.
