PRINCETON, N.J. — The Princeton Tigers claimed their second-straight Ivy League Men's Soccer Tournament title on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Cornell at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. With the win, the Tigers clinched their spot in the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
The Tigers struck quickly in the game, finding the net in just the sixth minute when Sam Vigilante finished a chance created by Liam Beckwith to take a 1-0 lead. Although the Big Red responded with spells of possession, they couldn’t turn that control into goals. Throughout the first half, Cornell generated multiple half-chances, with forwards Adam Schaban and Sergio Zapata each getting chances. The Big Red's best opportunity came late in the half, when Cornell earned a penalty just before halftime. However, Cornell couldn't convert as Princeton's goalkeeper Andrew Samuels, the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, stopped Kasper Wollstein's effort.
The second half followed a similar pattern as Cornell continued to apply pressure, but Princeton thwarted multiple chances. Big Red midfielder Sam Latona forced another save from Samuels in the 65th minute, and defenders Aidan Martin and Campbell Reece both had attempts of their own as Cornell searched for an equalizer.
As the match entered its final minutes, Princeton delivered the decisive blow. In the 87th minute, a well-worked sequence ended with Liam Beckwith scoring his second goal of the season, assisted by Vigilante and Daniel Ittycheria to clinch a 2-0 victory for the Tigers.
Princeton will wait to hear their matchup while Cornell will hope to hear their name called on tomorrow's NCAA selection show at 1 p.m.
