Men's Ice Hockey All-Ivy and Major Awards Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- For the sixth time in the last eight seasons, a Harvard skater was named Ivy League Player of the Year as Sean Farrell takes home the league’s top honor for the 2022-23 season. Harvard, in fact, swept the Ivy League’s major awards for the second straight year as Joe Miller was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Ted Donato was named Ivy League Coach of the Year.

Farrell had a dominant second season for the Crimson in Ivy League play, registering an Ivy League-best 21 points on six goals and a league-high 15 assists in 10 games played. The junior was the only player in the Ivy League to reach the 20-point plateau in the 2022-23 season, eclipsing the nearest players, his teammates Alex Laferriere and Matthew Coronato, by six points. Farrell was extremely consistent during Ivy League play, tallying points in 9 of 10 Ivy League games with his season-high five points coming in a 6-3 win over Dartmouth on February 10th.

Miller finished the season tied atop the rankings for freshman scoring in the Ivy League, producing nine points in 10 games played. He scored in six of 10 Ivy League games with Harvard going 6-0-0 in those games. Miller’s best game of the Ivy League season came in just his second collegiate game where he scored 1 goal and 2 assists in a 4-2 Harvard victory over Princeton.

Donato was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year for a second consecutive year, and third time overall, after leading Harvard to a 9-1-0 record in Ivy League games. His Crimson team was the top-scoring team in the Ivy League, outscoring opponents 41-20, and held the best penalty kill in the conference, with opponents converting just 17.2 percent of their power play opportunities. Harvard became the first 9-win team since the 2017-18 season and now has a conference-best 25 Ivy League Championships.

The All-Ivy First Team was made up of players from the league’s top two teams, Harvard and Cornell. Farrell was a unanimous selection as was fellow Harvard forward Matt Coronato. Coronato had 15 points, on 8 goals and 7 assists, tying for the league lead in goals scored and ranking tied for second in points. The third and fourth Harvard players to be named First Team All-Ivy were goaltender Mitch Gibson and defenseman Henry Thrun. Of primary starters, Gibson had the best win percentage, second-best goals against average, and fourth-best save percentage. Thrun was the only defenseman to reach double-digit points in the 2022-23 Ivy League season, scoring one goal and adding 9 assists, while also blocking 11 shots in 9 games played. The other unanimous selection to the All-Ivy First Team was Cornell defenseman Sam Malinski. Malinski anchored the top scoring defense in the league while ranking second on Cornell in scoring with 8 total points. Cornell’s other representative was Kyle Penney, who led the Big Red with 9 points, on 3 goals and 6 assists.

There were four teams represented on the All-Ivy Second Team, with Princeton and Brown each earning two selections. Liam Gorman and Ian Murphy occupied two of the forward spots as Princeton’s representatives, while Brown’s honorees were defenseman Luke Krys and goaltender Mathieu Caron. Harvard forward Alex Laferriere, with his 15 Ivy League points, brought the Crimson’s total All-Ivy selections to five. Lastly, Tanner Palocsik completed the All-Ivy Second Team as Dartmouth’s lone representative.

In addition to the All-Ivy and major awards, the Academic All-Ivy team was announced consisting of one student-athlete from each of the league's six programs: Brown's Samuli Niiiisaari, Cornell's Travis Mitchell, Dartmouth's Tyler Campbell, Harvard's Baker Shore, Princeton's Nick Seitz and Yale's Michael Young.
