Women's Tennis All-Ivy, Postseason Awards Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Yale’s Chelsea Kung and Princeton’s Neha Velaga earned Ivy League women’s tennis postseason awards following a vote of the league’s eight head coaches.

Princeton’s Laura Granville was named Ivy League Coach of the Year, Yale junior Chelsea Kung was selected as Player of the Year and Princeton sophomore Neha Velaga reaped Rookie of the Year honors.

Kung posted a 19-6 singles mark en route to a unanimous First Team All-Ivy nod — the first of her career in singles. She went 14-4 during the spring season, including an undefeated 6-0 mark at the No. 1 position in league play after she upended the nation’s top-ranked player. The Fort Worth, Texas native is in the top three Ivy League players to be ranked in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) at No. 71. Additionally, Kung achieved a 15-11 mark at the No. 1 position in doubles this season.

Kung is the second Bulldog student-athlete to be recognized as Player of the Year, joining Janet Kim (2008).

Velaga posted a 20-12 singles mark, playing the Ivy League season at No. 2, but split time playing in the 1-5 spots all season. She finished the spring season with a 9-6 overall, 5-0 Ivy singles mark. The Colmar, Pa. native, went 8-13 at No. 1-3 doubles this season— including a 4-2 doubles mark in league play.

Velaga is only the fourth Tiger to be honored as Rookie of the Year, accompanied by Lauren McHale (2009), Neha Uberoi (2003) and Kavitha Krishnamurthy (2000).

Granville led Princeton to claiming the Ivy League title for the third consecutive season and the 16th time in program history. The Ivy League Coach of the Year honor has been awarded for just six years and Granville has claimed all but one of them. The Tigers will return to the NCAA Tournament with the Ivy League’s automatic bid for the fifth time over the past six seasons, currently sits at No. 42 in the ITA Division I Women’s National Team Ranking.

Cornell freshman Lan Mi, Penn senior Iuliia Bryzgalova, Princeton junior Daria Frayman and Kung were all selected as First-Team All-Ivy. Brown’s Britany Lau rounds out the First-Team All-Ivy singles lineup, along with Rookie of the Year Velaga.

Brown's Lau and Penn’s Bryzgalova are the lone Ivies to claim First-Team All-Honors in singles and doubles.

All eight Ivy League programs are represented between the First and Second All-Ivy squads.

Additionally, one student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the court as members of the 2021-22 Ivy League Women's Tennis Academic All-Ivy team. Brown’s Sophia Reddy, Columbia's Melissa Sakar, Cornell’s Jenny Wong, Dartmouth's Chidimma Okpara, Harvard’s Mihaela Marculescu, Penn's Amanda Chun, Princeton’s Nathalie Rodilosso and Yale's Jessie Gong were each named to the team.
