Women's Tennis All-Ivy, Postseason Awards Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Penn freshman Iuliia Bryzgalova became the fifth Ivy to receive both Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season, while Princeton head coach Laura Granville was a unanimous choice for Coach of the Year after a vote by the Ivy League women’s tennis head coaches.

Bryzgalova is the first player to receive both postseason awards in the same year since former Quaker Connie Hsu in 2011. Bryzgalova is the fifth-ever to accomplish the feat and the fourth from Penn, joining, among others, her head coach Sanela Kunovac, who was voted Player and Rookie of the Year in 2001. Bryzgalova is 28-3 in 2018-19, including a 15-1 mark during the Spring slate and a 5-0 record in Ivy League play. She is the seventh Quaker to be named Rookie of the Year and the fifth to be voted Player of the Year. Bryzgalova also earned first-team All-Ivy singles and second-team All-Ivy doubles.

Granville earns her fourth Coach of the Year honor, especially impressive when taken into consideration that the award is only in its fifth year of existence. She received the inaugural award in 2015, as well as taking home the honor in 2016 and 2018. Granville guided the 2018-19 Tigers to an 18-4 record, including a 7-0 Ivy mark for their 15th overall League title and fifth in the last six seasons. It also marked the program’s first-ever back-to-back undefeated seasons. Princeton, ranked No. 33 in the nation, will find out its NCAA Tournament first round opponent on Monday, April 29.

Princeton freshman Brianna Shvets was named first team in singles and doubles, after going 5-1 in both in Ivy competition, teaming with Nicole Kalhorn in the latter category. Yale placed two on the singles All-Ivy first team, including the 2018 Rookie of the Year Samantha Martinelli, who was a unanimous selection en route to her second-straight first team honor. Harvard senior Erica Oosterhout was named to the first team singles for the third-straight year, and first team doubles (with Natasha Gonzalez) for the second time in her career and first since 2017.

Columbia sophomore Jennifer Kerr was a unanimous first team singles selection after receiving second team accolades last season, and Dartmouth junior Raquel Lyn rounded out the rest of the first team. The Penn duo of Marta Kowalska and Marija Curnic were unanimously selected first-team All-Ivy doubles. Cornell was represented on the All-Ivy list by freshman Valerie Ho, who was voted second team.
